We’ve got a couple interesting things for you this afternoon before we get to today’s release news...

First up, reviews... I’ve posted my in-depth thoughts on Tim Burton’s Batman (1989) in 4K Ultra HD here at The Bits and will have reviews of Batman Returns, Batman Forever, and Batman & Robin in 4K over the next few days. The upshot of this first Batman film in 4K is that Warner’s new transfer and Atmos mix are terrific, but the HDR may take a little getting used to and a few of the sound effects have been changed for reasons explained in the review. You can read that here.

Also, Tim has posted a review of Archer: Danger Island – The Complete Season Nine on DVD from Fox and Dennis has looked at Isn’t It Romantic on Blu-ray from Warner.

And some of you may know that this past weekend was the 40th anniversary of Ridley Scott’s original Alien (1979). So our own Michael Coate has posted a new History, Legacy, and Showmanship retrospective column looking back at the film’s theatrical release. It includes a great new roundtable of experts to discuss the film, including authors Chris Barsanti, Paul M. Sammon, and J.W. Rinzler (whose new book The Making of Alien is coming in July). You can read the piece here and if you’re a fan of the film, I think you’ll really enjoy it. [Read on here...]

Now then, the big release news today is that Shout! Factory has officially announced the Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital release details for Ira Steven Behr’s What We Left Behind: Looking Back at Star Trek: Deep Space Nine documentary. Look for it to arrive on 8/6 in two BD versions... a standard Blu-ray that will be widely available in stores and a Blu-ray Special Edition only available directly from the Shout! website. There will also be DVD and Digital versions available that same day.

Both BDs will include An Intro from Ira, 3 featurettes (A Brief History of Deep Space Nine, Behind the Scenes at the Variety Photoshoot, and More from the Fans), plus What We Left Out: Deleted Scenes, an HD Remaster Discussion with the Filmmakers, and the Theatrical Trailer. To this, the Special Edition BD will add a bonus disc that includes A Roundtable Look at The Making of the Documentary (a 50-minute discussion with co-director and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine showrunner Ira Steven Behr, co-director David Zappone, producer Kai de Mello-Folsom, producer/editor Joseph Kornbrodt, and producer/editor Luke Snailham) and A Musical Reunion with Composers Dennis McCarthy and Kevin Kiner. Here’s a look at the cover artwork for each BD (with pre-order links)...

Twilight Time has announced the extras for their June slate of Blu-ray titles, due on 6/18. They’ll include: Hello Frisco, Hello (1943 – with an isolated score track, the Hello Again: The Remaking of Alice Faye featurette, 2 Hello Frisco, Hello radio programs, and the trailer), Mother Wore Tights (1947 – includes a Mother Wore Tights radio program), Pin Up Girl (1944 – includes audio commentary with film historian Richard Schickel, the This Is It deleted musical number, and the trailer), and Hussy (1980 – includes the trailer).

Meanwhile, Lionsgate is releasing The Poison Rose on Blu-ray and Digital on 6/25. The film stars John Travolta and Morgan Freeman.

And finally today, a number of new Blu-ray and 4K titles are available for pre-order on Amazon, including Lionsgate’s John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, and Sony’s Stand By Me and Brightburn.
