All right, it’s really interesting… I was just digging into the topic of Disney and 4K this week, because thousands of you have been understandably desperate for news of anything 4K from the Disney and 20th Century Studios catalogs, and suddenly this morning a press release dropped into my inbox:

Disney is officially releasing a pair of classic Robin Williams films, including Chris Columbus’s Mrs. Doubtfire (1993) and Peter Weir’s Dead Poets Society (1989), on physical 4K Ultra HD on September 29th!

This is indeed the real deal, and you can see the cover artwork at left and also below the break.

And it’s rather surprising to finally get a bit of good 4K catalog news from Disney after the drought that’s been the year of 2026 so far. We did of course get David Fincher’s Fight Club (1999) back in May, but we knew that was coming way back in 2024. And more recently we’ve seen the release of Zach Cregger’s Barbarian (2022) and Thomas Kail’s Hamilton (2020) in 4K UHD. But that’s it so far this year.

Meanwhile, the theatrical release of The Devil Wears Prada 2 (2026) came and went, as did its Blu-ray and 4K release, without a similar 4K release of the original The Devil Wears Prada (2006)! How does that make any sense?

More concerning, while Disney and Lucasfilm released Andor: Season One on Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD back in April of 2024, there’s been no news of Andor: Season Two on either disc format (not to mention all the other Lucasfilm and Marvel series seasons that were released on disc but never followed up).

So 4K disc fans have been, shall we say, more than a little nervous about the future of Disney physical media. [Read on here...]

We’ve got one more new disc review to round out the week here at The Bits this afternoon...

Dennis has taken a look at Robert Day’s Two-Way Stretch (1960) on Blu-ray from Kino Lorber Studio Classics, a classic heist caper starring Peter Sellers.

The big release news today is that our friends at The Criterion Collection have just announced their June slate, which is absolutely fantastic! Look for 4K Ultra HD upgrades of Terry Gilliam’s Brazil (1985) (Spine #51) and Paul Schrader’s Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters (1985) (Spine #432) on 6/3, followed by Sidney Lumet’s The Wiz (1978) (Spine #1264) in 4K UHD and Blu-ray on 6/10, Charlotte Zwerin’s Thelonious Monk Straight, No Chaser (1988) (Spine #1265) and Mitchell Leisen’s Midnight (1939) (Spine #1266) both on Blu-ray on 6/17, and François Girard’s Thirty Two Short Films About Glenn Gould (1993) (Spine #1268) and William Friedkin’s Sorcerer (1977) (Spine #1267) in 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray on 6/24. Of these, Brazil, The Wiz, and Sorcerer will have Dolby Vision HDR. You can read more here and you can see the cover art for these above left and also below the break. [Read on here...]
