Finally today, I wanted to take a moment to acknowledge the occasion of David Letterman’s retirement and last day as host of The Late Show on CBS. Dave has been a fixture in my life each night since I was in high school. He’s made me laugh when I’ve needed it, sometimes so hard it brought tears. Way back in 1988, he actually hired a high school friend of mine (a fellow North Dakotan named Jay Johnson) as an intern, and he’s worked for Dave to this very day. To paraphrase The Dude from Big Lebowski, sometimes there’s a man... well, he’s the man for his time and place. He fits right in there. And that’s Dave Letterman, on late night TV, over the past 30 years. You want to see some funny? Watch these two segments of highlights featuring Dave and Johnny Carson in action together...
Johnny Carson certainly knew Dave was the man when he effectively passed the baton in 1994 by making his last ever TV appearance on Dave’s show. And so did we. Our good friend and Bits family member Adam Jahnke has written a few nice words about what Dave’s meant to us all over on his new blog, so do give that a look too. It would be hard to say it better.
I’ll just close with this picture of Dave’s first guest, Bill Murray, on NBC’s Late Night back in 1982. As it was in the beginning, so shall it ever be. Thanks for everything, Dave.
Stay tuned...
