Review

The classic Merrie Melodies and Looney Tunes era from 1930 to 1969 is considered the cream of the crop when it comes to quality, especially when these theatrical shorts hit their stride and became less about showcasing musical numbers to sell records and more about comedy with characters like Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, and Porky Pig, among many others. Occasional new shorts were produced over the years since then, not to mention various film and television appearances, but it wasn’t until the 2000s when the franchise saw revivals on the small screen in varying incarnations. One of those was Looney Tunes Cartoons, which streamed on HBO Max from 2020 to 2024, being made up of various animated segments that were similar to the theatrical shorts made in the heyday of Looney Tunes, at least as close as anyone has come.

While I certainly have some critiques of the show, one can definitely appreciate the filmmakers behind Looney Tunes Cartoons attempting to re-capture some of magic of the classic Looney Tunes animated theatrical shorts that all of us grew up watching on television. Not only are the characters portrayed and presented in the same way with a more adult edge, but they also go out of their way to mix up the styles of the intros of each cartoon. One random cartoon might have a “Blue Ribbon” title card, while another might feature the 1960s-style title card. And despite clearly being drawn in a digital domain, the style of the animation is mostly classic. Bugs, Daffy, Porky, Tweety, Road Runner, Foghorn Leghorn, and the rest all have a readily familiar look.

The content of each cartoon, however, can be a mixed bag. It’s hard to judge these things since many of us still have classic Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies shorts up on pedestals, but the kind of comedy in these cartoons leans slightly more modern, influenced no doubt by the likes of Ren & Stimpy, at least in some cases. Again, it’s probably not fair to hold them to such high standards, but it’s difficult not to make comparisons when the filmmakers are trying so hard to replicate that classic style and feel. It doesn’t entirely work for me, though I did find some occasional laughs along the way, and appreciated what the show was trying to accomplish. It’s certainly closer in tone and feel to any classic Looney Tunes in decades. Younger viewers may get much more out of them, and perhaps that’s more than enough to warrant their existence.

Looney Tunes Cartoons was animated digitally, likely at 2K quality, and framed for streaming at the aspect ratio of 1.78:1. The Warner Archive Collection debuts the entire 82-episode run of the show on Blu-ray for the first time, spread out across six dual-layered BD-50 discs. As I said before, it’s a terrific-looking show, and it’s given much more space to breathe on disc. All of the episodes are colorful and vibrant with high levels of crisp detail and maxed-out bitrates. The contrast is perfect with deep blacks and only minor moments when detail is lacking on solid surfaces, which is most noticeable during the opening credits. Outside of that, the show is stable and beautifully-rendered, leaving no room for complaint.

Audio is included in English 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio with optional subtitles in English SDH. The soundtracks for each short aren’t necessarily interested in blowing up the sound space with immense surround activity. Instead, they focus on strong scores and sound effects with everything from ambient to explosive qualities. Dialogue is always discernible and nothing sounds out of place. In other words, the show sounds just as good as it looks, without trying to re-invent the textures or styles found in the classic Looney Tunes library.

The Warner Archive Collection 6-Disc Blu-ray release of Looney Tunes Cartoons: The Complete Series is provided in a multi-disc blue Amaray disc with double-sided artwork, featuring the detailed contents of each disc on the inner sleeve. The show’s six seasons bleeding into each other’s discs is clearly meant to maximize disc capacities and bitrates, but I found it annoying in an OCD sort of way. I would have preferred each season having its own dedicated disc, with the exception of the first season’s 31 episodes, of course. The inclusion of the sports shorts as a bonus feature is odd since they’re in the style of the New Looney Tunes show that aired from 2015-2020, and really should be included with a release of that show. Still, long-time Looney Tunes fans will at least be pleased to have them on disc at all, even if they do belong on another release. The biggest and most glaring omission, or in this case omissions, are the various shorts that were produced but never included in the main Looney Tunes Cartoons show. Some were shown at various Comic-Cons or on Youtube, but others have never been officially released anywhere. They include:

  • A Hard Pill to Swallow
  • Beach Blanket Bunny
  • Big Rig Bunny
  • Build-a-Lings
  • Dynamite Dance
  • Car Wars
  • Happy Birthday Bugs Bunny!
  • High Hopes
  • Hole Lotta Trouble
  • Life Boat
  • Pwastic Suwgeon: Calves
  • Pwastic Suwgeon: Pecs
  • Sick as a Hare
  • There Will Be Fudd

While the show and its release on Blu-ray has its pros and cons, the good far outweighs the... not necessarily bad, but at times a little irksome. Nevertheless, fans of Looney Tunes Cartoons, and Looney Tunes in general, will definitely want to have it in their collection—if not for any other reason than to finally have another show escape the death of being wiped from from a streaming service. For those reasons and more, this release comes highly recommended.
