Kino sets High Plains Drifter for 4K, plus Encanto, Supergirl, a Star Trek: TMP – Director’s Edition update, and more

We’ve got more reviews and some great new announcements today as well. As usual, let’s start with the reviews...

I’ve just taken an in-depth look at Orson Welles’ Citizen Kane (1941) with an assist from the late great Bits reviewer Barrie Maxwell. The film is now available in a 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray Disc combo edition from The Criterion Collection and it’s worth every penny. The package features a terrific new film restoration and a wealth of new and legacy special features. As you know, there’s an issue with the movie Blu-ray in the package, but Criterion is already fixing it and I wouldn’t let that stop you from picking up what is one of the best releases of 2021.

Also today, Stephen has taken a look at Glenn Jordan’s Mass Appeal (1984) on Blu-ray from Code Red, and William Malone’s Creature (1985) on Blu-ray from Vinegar Syndrome.

Tim has checked in with this thoughts on Jeffrey Obrow and Stephen Carpenter’s The Kindred (1987) on Blu-ray from Synapse Films.

And Dennis has offered his thoughts on Jerry Schatzberg’s The Seduction of Joe Tynan (1979) on Blu-ray from Kino Lorber Studio Classics. [Read on here...]

Speaking of Kino Lorber Studio Classics, the company has just announced that it’s working on a new 4K Ultra HD release of Clint Eastwood’s High Plains Drifter (1973). We expect it to arrive sometime in early 2022, with a new Dolby Vision HDR master. You can see the cover artwork above left.

Walt Disney Animated Studios and Disney Media & Entertainment have just officially set the animated Encanto for release on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD on 2/8/22, with the Digital release due on 12/24. Extras will include 5 deleted scenes, Sing-Along Songs, Outtakes, and 8 behind-the-scenes featurettes. Again, you can see the cover artwork below.

Also, Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has just announced the Blu-ray and DVD release of the animated The Addams Family 2 on 1/18/22. Extras will include a trio of featurettes (We’re Altogether Addams, Courage to be Kooky, and The Addams Family Road Trip Checklist).

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment and DC have just set Supergirl: The Complete Sixth & Final Season and Supergirl: The Complete Series for Blu-ray and DVD release on 3/8/22 (SRP $24.98, $29.98, $119.99, and $134.99 respectively). The final season includes all 20 episodes along with 2 special features (Deleted Scenes and A Farewell Tribute to Supergirl). You can see the cover artwork below.

Via Vision Entertainment in Australia has Day of the Dead: Season 1 coming on Blu-ray and DVD on 1/5/22.

RLJE Films and AMC Networks will release The Djinn on Blu-ray and DVD on 1/4/22.

Blue Underground has announced the 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray release of The Toolbooks Murders on 1/18/22, mastered from a new 16-bit 4K restoration of the uncut original negative.

And Shout! Studios has announced the streaming release of Diary of the Grizzly Man on 1/11/22. This is from some of same people as the feature film Grizzly Man.

Also today, Star Trek.com has added more behind-the-scenes photos to their gallery for the ongoing restoration of Star Trek: The Motion Picture – Director’s Edition. You can see those here.

Finally, I wanted to share this: Timo Wolters of the excellent German website Blu-ray Rezensionen.net has done a really in-depth review of StudioCanal’s repackaged Terminator 2: Judgment Day in 4K Ultra HD. And he does a great job of breaking down just why StudioCanal’s image restoration is so bad, completely with direct image comparisons between the previous Blu-ray and the new DNR-scrubbed Blu-ray and 4K editions. I’ve noted before that Bits sources who have seen the original 4K scan prior to DNR scrubbing say that it’s fantastic. Timo’s review allows you to see for yourself why we’ve been saying that StudioCanal really needs to go back and redo this title and get it right. Well done, Timo!
