A Quiet Place: Day One is official, plus Ghost, Paramount Scares V2, Arrow & Shout’s October slates, Super Friends! on Blu-ray, Seven Samurai & Watership Down in 4K from the BFI & more!

We’re starting the new week as always with more new disc reviews…

First, our own Tim Salmons has turned in his thoughts on Imprint Films’ new double feature of The Uninvited (1944) and The Unseen (1945) on region-free Blu-ray, a pair of film noir titles both directed by Lewis Allen.

And Stephen has weighed in with a look at a hefty title of his own: Full Moon Features’ new The Primevals: Ultimate Collector’s Edition Blu-ray box set, featuring the restored 2023 David Allen film, which was originally greenlit in 1978 but wasn’t filmed until 1994. Sadly, Allen passed away in 1999 before the film was completed. But thanks to an Indiegogo campaign, it’s finally completed as much as is possible and available on disc. And what a nice package it is too.

More reviews are on the way of course, but today we’ve got a TON of Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD release news to catch up all up on. It starts with Arrow’s Friday morning announcement of their October slate, which includes John Boorman’s Exorcist II: The Heretic (1977) on Blu-ray (in the UK only) on 10/7, William Peter Blatty’s The Exorcist III (1990) on 4K (in the UK only) on 10/7, the Hellraiser: Quartet of Torment box set—which includes Clive Barker’s Hellraiser (1987), Tony Randel’s Hellbound: Hellraiser II (1988), Anthony Hickox’s Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth (1992), and Kevin Yagher’s Hellraiser: Bloodline (1996)—on Blu-ray and 4K (in the US and Canada only, it was already released in the UK) on 10/22, Michael Dougherty’s Trick ‘r Treat (2007) on 4K (in the UK, US, and Canada) on 10/28, and the J-Horror Rising: Limited Edition Blu-ray box set—which includes Shunichi Nagasaki’s Shikoku (1999), Toshiyuki Mizutani’s Isola: Multiple Personality Girl (2000), Masato Harada’s Inugami (2001), Ten Shimoyama’s St. John’s Wort (2001), Kōji Shiraishi’s Carved: The Slit-Mouthed Woman (2007), Takashi Komatsu’s Persona (2000), and Koji Shiraishi’s Noroi: The Curse (2005)—on Blu-ray (in the UK, US, and Canada) also on 10/28. Now then, we’re just getting started… Paramount has just set Michael Sarnoski’s A Quiet Place: Day One (2024) for release on Blu-ray, DVD, 4K Ultra HD, and 4K Steelbook on 10/8, with the Digital release expected on 7/30. Extras will include deleted and extended scenes, plus 5 featurettes (including Day Zero: Beginnings and Endings, In the City: Chaos in Chinatown, The Exodus: Against the Tide, The Long Walk: Monsters in Midtown, and Pizza at the End of the World). The 4K will include both Dolby Vision HDR and Dolby Atmos audio. You can see the cover below.

Paramount has also set Jerry Zucker’s Ghost (1990) as a Paramount Presents 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray release on 10/22. Here’s what that looks like (click here or on the image to pre-order it on Amazon)…

And here’s the big Paramount news… the studio has just set their Paramount Scares: Volume Two 4K and Blu-ray box set for release on 10/1. The set includes Jonathan Mostow’s Breakdown (1997), Marc Forster’s World War Z (2013), Steve Miner’s Friday the 13th: Part II (1981), and William Brent Bell’s Orphan: First Kill (2022). Paramount Scares: Volume Two (4K Ultra HD)

We’re just warming up here… the British Film Institute (BFI) has just set a physical 4K Ultra HD release of Akira Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai (1954) for release on 10/21 in the UK. Note that we expect the Criterion Collection to release it here in the States in November or December.

Speaking of the BFI, we’ve also learned that they’re finally releasing their once cancelled Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD editions of Martin Rosen’s animated Watership Down (1978). Look for them to street on November 11. You can pre-order them here. Thanks to Bits reader Michael R. for the heads up!

Universal is now taking pre-orders on the Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD release of Lee Isaac Chung’s Twisters (2024). There’s no street date yet, but you’ll find the Amazon links here and here.

The same is also true of Osgood Perkins’ Longlegs (2024) from Neon and Decal Releasing, which is available for pre-order on Amazon in Blu-ray here and 4K here. Street date is also TBA, but the 4K will include on-set interviews with the director and cast, audio commentary with Perkins, trailers, and 3 featurettes (The Clues, The Evidence, and Dirty+Sweet).

Here’s a nice surprise for Gen-X animation fans: Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment and DC Studios have just set Super Friends!: The Complete Collection for release on 9-disc Blu-ray on 9/10! You can see the cover art below.

We have a quick update for you on UK label Second Sight’s forthcoming 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray release of Robert Harmon’s The Hitcher (1986). As you may recall, the company’s pre-order pages for the title were taken down for US and Canadian customers, as the company has learned they aren’t allowed to ship the title to those countries for contractual reasons. However, if you’re in the US and Canada and you’ve already pre-ordered the title from them, they will be shipping it anyway—they’re just not taking new orders from US and Canadian customers. What’s more, the title will still be available to US and Canadian customers via DiabolikDVD, Grindhouse Video, and also Amazon.com (via the links below)…

Not done yet… our friends at Kino Lorber Studio Classics have just announced more new titles. Look for Robert Rossen’s Body and Soul (1947) on Blu-ray and Joan Darling’s First Love (1977) on Blu-ray and DVD on 9/17. Sidney Lumet’s Murder on the Orient Express (1974) is coming to 4K Ultra HD in honor of the film’s 50th anniversary on 9/24. And Daniel Taplitz’s TV movie Nightlife (1989) is coming soon to Blu-ray, while Peter Berg’s The Rundown (2003) is now coming soon to 4K Ultra HD.

Finally today, we’ve saved some of the best news for last: The good folks at Shout! Studios have just unveiled more of their planned October Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD release slate (for Shout! Factory, Scream Factory, etc)! Look for this to include John Erick Dowdle’s As Above, So Below (2014) on Blu-ray and Chuck Russell’s The Blob (1988) on 4K Steelbook on 10/1, the animated Arcane: League of Legends – Season One (2021) on Blu-ray, Blu-ray Steelbook, and 4K Ultra HD Steelbook (for GKids) and John Erick Dowdle’s Devil (2010) in 4K on 10/8, George A. Romero’s Land of the Dead (2005) on 4K Ultra HD on 10/15, Robert Zemeckis’ Death Becomes Her (1992) in 4K Ultra HD and Joe Johnston’s The Wolfman (2010) in 4K Ultra HD on 10/22, and finally Sam Raimi’s Drag Me to Hell (2009) in 4K Ultra HD and Wes Craven’s Shocker (1989) in 4K Ultra HD on 10/29. And in November, look for the anime series Tonikawa: Over the Moon for You – Season One on Blu-ray on 11/11.
