All right, we’ve got a couple good items of business for you today, the first of which is a new 4K review…

I’ve just given Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar a look on 4K Ultra HD from Paramount. The disc streets next Tuesday, 12/19. It’s a full native 4K transfer and of course the film was shot in a combination of 35 mm and 65 mm IMAX, so it’s variable aspect ratio and looks tremendous. The disc will also appear in Warner’s Christopher Nolan Collection 4K box set which streets next Tuesday as well. We don’t yet have the whole box, but as soon as we do, rest assured we’ll get the other films reviewed for you guys as soon as possible.

FYI, Tim has also just posted his review of Captain from Castile on Blu-ray from Twilight Time. Enjoy! [Read on here…]

All right, now for that other bit of business today. THIS IS NOT OFFICIAL, so I want to be very clear about that. It’s a rumor and nothing should be considered confirmed until the studio makes its official announcement. But… I’ve now gotten word from no less than five international and domestic retail sources that say Disney and Lucasfilm will release Rian Johnson’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi on 4K Ultra HD day and date with Blu-ray and DVD early next year. We’ve updated our 4K Ultra HD Release List here at The Bits accordingly.

We don’t have a street date, but given typical home video widows, 2nd Quarter 2018 seems a good estimate. The only other UHD details we have at the moment are that the film was finished to a full native 4K Digital Intermediate and that the 4K disc is likely to have Dolby Atmos audio. Don’t ask us about Rogue One or The Force Awakens or A New Hope coming to 4K yet because we have no idea. And again, let me qualify that THIS IS NOT OFFICIAL. But as mentioned, we’ve heard it from five separate retail sources now and we have confidence that it has a high likelihood of being true. Indeed, listings for the title have now appeared here on CDON.se and here on DiscShop.se as well, both reputable Swedish retailers. Based on those retailers, it also appears that there will be regular Blu-ray, Blu-ray 3D, and DVD SKUs as well, and that the Blu-rays are likely to feature DTS-HD Master Audio sound mixes. FYI, the cover artwork at left is what’s appearing on those retail sites but it’s obvously a placeholder and not final.

So… there you have it. Star Wars: The Last Jedi opens in theaters here in the States tomorrow night and we’ve already got our tickets for the first show. We hear from industry friends who’ve seen it that it’s pretty damn great. We’ll post our non-spoiler review of the film here on The Bits on Friday. So go forth and enjoy!

And stay tuned…!
