Meanwhile, we have word of more forthcoming 4K titles, both new and catalog, that we’d like to call your attention to today…
First, Thor: Ragnarok is confirmed to be Disney’s next 4K Ultra HD release, expected early in 2018, and Best Buy is going to have an exclusive Steelbook version.
Paramount will release Darren Aronofsky’s Mother! for Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD release on 12/19.
We’ve learned that Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release The Dark Crystal on 4K early next year.
Universal continues to feed more catalog into the 4K production stream as well and thus is preparing to bring Ridley Scott’s Robin Hood, the Coen Brothers’ The Big Lebowski, Elizabeth Banks’ Pitch Perfect 2, and F. Gary Gray’s Straight Outta Compton to 4K Ultra HD in early 2018.
And it looks as if Warner Bros. Home Entertainment will release The LEGO Ninjago Movie on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD on 12/19.
One last 4K Ultra HD note: Some of you may have taken note of Warner’s delay in shipping their new 4K Ultra HD edition of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. We’ve confirmed that this is due to a production issue that’s been corrected, but it’s delayed shipment of final product for a short time. It should be on its way to retailers soon.
On the standard Blu-ray front, Olive Films has announced their next pair of Olive Signature Editions, which are due on 12/5. Look for Elaine May’s A New Leaf (1971) and Max Ophüls’ Letter from an Unknown Woman (1948).
Shout! Factory has just set Joseph Sargent’s Colossus: The Forbin Project for release on Blu-ray here in the States on 2/27/18. Shout! and Scream also have Farwell, My Lovely/The Big Sleep, The Gate II: Trespassers, the animated The Girl Without Hands, and William Castle’s The Night Walker coming on 2/20, along with Halo: Legends, Halo: The Fall of the Reach, Games, Night of the Seagulls, The Plague Dogs, and a Drag Me to Hell: Collector’s Edition on 2/13.
GKids and Shout! Factory will also be delivering Studio Ghibli’s Tales from Earthsea and Pom Poko on Blu-ray on 2/6/18.
Universal Studios Home Entertainment will release Death Race: Beyond Anarchy on Blu-ray and DVD on 1/30/18.
Oscilloscope Pictures has set Polina for Blu-ray and DVD release on 1/9/18.
Scorpion Releasing has set Dario Argento’s Opera for Blu-ray release on 1/23/18.
And industry sources are suggesting to us that the Criterion Collection is working on a new Blu-ray edition of George Romero’s original Night of the Living Dead for release early in 2018. Which is outstanding news. Based on recent Janus Films rights acquisitions, it also seems likely that Criterion will release a Godzilla box set at some point. You can read more here.
