Blu-ray News – Sony partners with Dolby for to add Dolby Vision HDR to future 4K UHD BDs

All right, we’ve got kind of a slow news day today, but we do have one thing for you…

Sony has just announced a partnership with Dolby Labs for the use of its Dolby Vision High Dynamic Range (HDR) mastering process in forthcoming Sony 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray releases (read the press release here at Business Wire). No titles have been announced yet, but based on the studio’s recent 4K remastering work you can reasonably expect such titles as The Fifth Element, Léon: The Professional, Bram Stoker’s Dracula, American Hustle, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Fury, Lawrence of Arabia, and more… eventually.  [Read on here…]

In other news, Bits readers are reporting that Amazon’s pre-order listing for The Hobbit Trilogy: Extended Edition on Blu-ray and DVD seems to be popping in and out of existence today, so maybe the retailer is finally getting ready to put the full accurate listing up. It should include DVD, Blu-ray, and Blu-ray 3D options for the Trilogy, as well as a special retail-exclusive giftset option (including a WETA statue) for The Battle of the Five Armies – Extended Edition on Blu-ray. We’ll monitor and see what happens.

And in a bit of actual release news this afternoon, Kino has set Brian Trenchard-Smith’s The Siege of Firebase Gloria (1989) for release on Blu-ray on 12/8. They also have Sidney Salkow’s Twice Told Tales (1963) due on Blu-ray on 12/1.
