Ghost in the Shell hits BD, 3D & 4K on 7/25, plus 4 BD reviews & 40 years of Smokey and the Bandit

All right, I hope you all had a great long holiday weekend – those of you in the States at least. And for the rest of you, I hope you had a great weekend plus Monday.

Here at The Bits today, we’ve got a few things for you to enjoy. First, reviews: We have four new Blu-ray reviews for you to check out, including Tim’s take on Universal’s Split and Smokey and the Bandit: 40th Anniversary Edition, as well as Paramount’s Saturday Night Fever: Director’s Cut. And I’ve taken a look at Madman Entertainment’s Region Free import Blu-ray of Frank Capra’s Lost Horizon – well worth checking out if you’re a fan of the film. [Read on here…]

Speaking of Smokey and the Bandit, we also posted a new History, Legacy & Showmanship retrospective from Michael Coate on Saturday afternoon, looking back at the film on the occasion of its 40th anniversary. It’s got details on the film’s initial theatrical release, some interesting facts and figures, and a great interview with film historian Lee Pfeiffer. Do give it a look.

And in announcement news today, Paramount has officially set director Rupert Sanders’ live-action Ghost in the Shell for release on Blu-ray, Blu-ray 3D, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD format on 7/25, with the Digital HD release expected on 7/7. The film stars Scarlett Johansson, Takeshi Kitano, Michael Carmen Pitt, Pilou Asbæk, Chin Han, and Juliette Binoche. Extras on the Blu-ray versions will include 3 featurettes (Hard-Wired Humanity: Making Ghost in the Shell, Section 9: Cyber Defenders, and Man & Machine: The Ghost Philosophy). And that’s it. Audio on the 4K and Blu-ray releases will be Dolby Atmos. You’ll find the cover artwork for all three Blu-ray versions below (click to pre-order them on Amazon.com)…
