While we’re talking 4K Ultra HD, retail sources (including Best Buy) are reporting that Universal will release a title we just mentioned here on The Bits on Monday, Ron Howard’s Backdraft, on 4K on 5/7. That same day, you’ll also get Hellboy II: The Golden Army on 4K from the studio. And word is that Warner’s yet to be announced Batman Anthology 4K box set (due in June) will street the same day as single-film 4K SKUs of all four films in the set for those of you who prefer to one-at-a-time it. Lionsgate has officially set The Witch for release on 4K Ultra HD on 4/23 as we mentioned on Monday as well. The disc will include Dolby Vision HDR and DTS-HD Master Audio. Extras will carry over from the previous Blu-ray release, including an audio commentary, a featurette, a Q&A, and a gallery.
One more 4K bit of news... Warner has now officially set its animated DC Universe film Justice League vs. The Fatal Five for release on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K on 4/16, with the Digital release due on 4/30. The 4K disc will feature Dolby Vision HDR and Dolby Atmos audio. Extras will include audio commentary (with Bruce Timm, Sam Liu, Jim Krieg, and Eric Carrasco), 2 featurettes (Battling the Invisible Menace and Justice League vs. Fatal Five: Unity of Hero), 3 Sneak Peeks (Batman: Hush, Justice League Dark, and Justice League vs. Teen Titans), and 2 From the Vault episodes (Justice League Unlimited: Far from Home and Legion of Superheroes: Man of Tomorrow).
On the Blu-ray and DVD front, Kino Lorber Studio Classics has officially set their March slate as follows: Look for The Doctor (1991), Before and After (1996), Duets (2000), The Favor (1994), and Mad Dog and Glory (1993) on 3/5, The Earthling (1980) on 3/12, Losin’ It (1983), Lovers and Other Strangers (1970), Suppose They Gave a War and Nobody Came? (1970), The Minion (1998), and Far From Heaven (2002) on 3/19, and For a Few Dollars More (1965), Jivaro 3-D (1954), The Tarnished Angels (1958), Road to Singapore (1940), Road to Zanzibar (1941), Road to Morocco (1942), and Road to Utopia (1945) on 3/26.
Also, Lionsgate has set the romantic comedy Berlin, I Love You for Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital release on 4/9.
And finally, Neon has just announced that they’re bringing Todd Douglas Miller’s Apollo 11 documentary to IMAX theaters for a limited one week run starting on 3/1. A wider theatrical run starts a week later on 3/8. (Note that there are early shows in the evening on Thursday, 2/28 at many theaters.) The film was made largely of original 16mm, 35mm, and 65mm film taken by NASA during the Apollo program, including some unseen footage, that was scanned in 8K resolution. We have asked, and are waiting to hear back, whether there will be a Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD release of this film. We sure hope the answer is yes to both.
