All right, we’ve got a bit of ground to cover today. As you may be aware, I’ve been away for a few days. Specifically, my wife and I were attending a family gathering (of my brothers and sister, plus significant others) in Chicago this past weekend. Sarah and I also just celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary yesterday. So things have been a little busy here, as you can imagine, but good busy!

Meanwhile, our own Jim Hemphill did post a review of Kino Lorber’s Defiance on Blu-ray on Friday afternoon. Tim Salmons also took some time on Monday to honor the passing of a director and horror film legend we all greatly admire here at The Bits: Wes Craven. The man who gave us The Last House on the Left, The Hills Have Eyes, Nightmare on Elm Street, Scream, and many more died of cancer on Sunday. He was 76 and will be dearly missed. (Read more here at NPR.) So you should check out both of those posts if you haven’t already.  [Read on here…]

Also today, our own Russell Hammond has updated the Release Dates & Artwork section with all the latest Blu-ray and DVD cover artwork as well as pre-order links. As always, a portion of anything at all that you order from them after clicking through our site links goes to help support The Bits and we greatly appreciate it.

Now then... all that aside, let’s have a Blu-ray and DVD release news update...

First up, Paramount has officially announced the Blu-ray 3D, Blu-ray and DVD release of Terminator Genisys on 11/10. All versions will include the film. The Blu-ray versions will also include 3 featurettes (Family Dynamics, Infiltration and Terminator, and Upgrades: VFX of Terminator Genisys), plus a Dolby Atmos soundtrack. SRP is $52.99, $39.99, and $29.99 respectively.

Lionsgate has set Bill Condon’s Mr. Holmes for Blu-ray and DVD release on 11/10. The film stars Ian McKellen and Laura Linney. Extras will include a pair of featurettes.

Warner Home Video has moved the street date for Elf: Buddy’s Musical Christmas on Blu-ray and DVD. Expect it now on 11/3.

20th Century Fox has set Paper Town for Blu-ray and DVD release on 10/20.

Fox and MGM have set the Rocky: Heavyweight Collection – 40th Anniversary Edition for Blu-ray release on 10/6 (SRP $49.99).

Screen Media will release Sherrybaby on Blu-ray on 9/29.

Kino Lorber has set Peter Fonda’s Wanda Nevada and Richard Fleischer’s The Spikes Gang for Blu-ray release on 11/3, followed by Norman Taurog’s Dr. Goldfoot and the Bikini Machine and Mario Bava’s Dr. Goldfoot and the Girl Bombs on 11/10, Andre de Toth’s Pitfall, Robert Florey’s The Crooked Way, Peter Yates’ The House on Carroll Street, and Lewis Allen’s A Bullet for Joey on 11/17, and Julian Roffman’s The Mask (Blu-ray 3D Combo), John Ford’s The Hurricane, Anthony Lanza’s Incredible Two-Headed Transplant (with optional RiffTrax), John Cassavetes’ A Child Is Waiting, and Guy Hamilton’s The Devil’s Disciple on 11/24.

Olive Films will also release a massive deluge of deep catalog titles on Blu-ray, all of them on 10/27, including Tom McLoughlin’s Stephen King’s Sometimes They Come Back, Saul Bass’ Phase IV, Tim Kincaid’s Breeders, Freddie Francis’ Deadly Bees and Dr. Terror’s House of Horrors, J. Lee Thompson’s Kinjite: Forbidden Subjects and Messenger of Death, Abel Ferrara’s Dangerous Game, Fred Brannon’s Flying Disc Man from Mars, Richard Fleischer’s Mandingo, Massimo Dallamano’s Black Veil for Lisa, Robert Townsend’s Meteor Man, Burt Reynolds’ The End, James Lapine’s Impromptu, Carl Reiner’s The One and Only, James C. Burrows’ Partners, Ron Shelton’s Dark Blue, Franklin Adreon’s No Man’s Woman, Cheech & Chong’s The Corsican Brothers, and Michelle Manning’s Blue City.

Also today, FilmRise has set Jason Aron’s Back in Time documentary for Blu-ray and DVD release on 10/21. It’s a look back at the impact Back to the Future had on society.

Sentai Filmworks & Section 23 are releasing Gatchaman: The Movie on Blu-ray and DVD on 11/17.

And Bayview Entertainment is releasing Jean Becker’s One Deadly Summer on Blu-ray and DVD on 11/10.

Finally, there are a couple of great articles about the future of Blu-ray (meaning 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray) and physical media in general that I wanted to call your attention to. The first comes from my longtime friends Ed Peters and Guido Henkel, and can be found at Guido’s excellent DVD Review website: Ultra HD Blu-ray: What If They Threw a Format and Nobody Came? It addresses some of the issues I’ve been saying here at The Bits for a while now, and it’s well worth reading. The second is Jason Bailey’s The Premature Death of Physical Media – and the Cult Home Video Labels Keeping It Alive over at Flavorwire. I think you’ll find both of these pieces worth your time, so be sure to give them a look.

We’ll leave you today with a look at some new and interesting Blu-ray cover art, with Amazon pre-order links if available...
