Part of the problem at the moment is that there’s really no baseline for calibrating a 4K home theater display for the HDR color space – similar experience with HD calibration only gets you so far. And it takes time to learn the quirks of the display, the player, and the software. As 4K UHD titles with HDR almost universally look “amazing”, the next challenge is not just to compare them to regular Blu-ray versions of the same title, but also to calibrate your expectations of what to expect from 4K UHD with HDR over many titles viewed... and that just takes time and patience. But, with a week’s experience under my belt, I expect I’ll have a better sense of things. So stay tuned for that next week.
In the meantime, 20th Century Fox has just officially announced the 4K Ultra HD BD, Blu-ray, and DVD release of Alejandro Iñárritu’s The Revenant on 4/19, with the digital HD release due on 3/22. The only extra available on the Blu-ray version will be the A World Unseen documentary. Both the UHD and BD will feature English 7.1 DTS-HD MA audio, while the DVD will include 5.1 Dolby Digital. Also today, Lionsgate has now officially set Room for Blu-ray and DVD release on 3/1. Extras on both will include audio commentary with director Lenny Abrahamson, cinematographer Danny Cohen, editor Nathan Nugent, and production designer Ethan Tobman, and 3 featurettes (Making Room, 11x11, and Recreating Room).
Our friends over at Scream Factory have just announced another great pair of Blu-ray Collector’s Edition titles that they’re working on for release on 6/14: Jeepers Creepers and Jeepers Creepers 2!
