Today being a work holiday here in the States, things are a bit slow news-wise, but we do have some good stuff for you nevertheless…

First, our own Tim Salmons has posted a review of Disney’s new Mary Poppins: 50th Anniversary Edition on Blu-ray Disc. Sounds like it’s loaded with content and the quality is excellent. Do check it out.

Also today, Doogan has updated his Gripe Soda column with another weekly installment of Doogan’s Queue, running down all of the great Blu-ray and DVD titles that street tomorrow.  [Read on here…]

Speaking of which, Russell Hammond has also posted the weekly Release Dates & Artwork update with all the latest Blu-ray, DVD and Video Game cover artwork and Amazon.com pre-order links. As always, a portion of anything you order from Amazon in the same session after clicking to them through our links goes to help support our work here at The Bits and we greatly appreciate it!

In announcement news today, the big news is that Warner Home Video has set Alfonso Cuarón’s Gravity for Blu-ray 3D Combo, Blu-ray Combo and DVD release on 2/25 (SRP $35.99, $35.99 and $28.98). Extras on the Blu-ray versions will include Extras will include 9 Gravity Mission Control featurettes (It Began With a Story, Initial Challenges: Long Shots and Zero G, Previsualizing Gravity, The Hues of Space, Physical Weightlessness, Space Tech, Sandra and George: A Pair in Space, Final Animation, and Complete Silence), 5 Shot Breakdown featurettes (Behind the Visor, Fire in the International Space Station, Dr. Stone’s Rebirth, The Sound of Action in Space, and Splashdown), the Collision Point: The Race to Clean Up Space featurette and Jonas Cuarón’s short film Aningaaq with optional introduction. Aningaaq shows us the other half of Sandra Bullock’s radio conversation with Earth from the film. Per Warner’s usual, there will likely be retail-exclusive BD versions with unique content.

Warner has also set Copperhead for Blu-ray and DVD release on 4/15.

Disney and Touchstone have set Vince Vaughn’s Delivery Man for Blu-ray and DVD release on 3/25.

And FUNimation has announced the DVD release of the Japanese anime One Piece, including One Piece Collection 9 on 4/15 and One Piece: Season Six, Voyage One on 5/13.

In other news today, you Atlanta-area film fans have something cool to look forward to later this month (and into next): The 2014 Atlanta Jewish Film Festival kicks off on Wednesday, 1/20 and runs until Thursday, 2/20. There are a TON of interesting narrative and documentary films showing throughout the month. And, as it happens, a former Bits staffer – Brad Pilcher – is the festival’s Assistant Director. Click here or on the banner below to visit the official festival website for all the screening times, information, and to buy tickets. Don’t miss it!

Finally, we want to take a moment today to acknowledge the passing of actor Russell Johnson (The Professor of TV’s Gilligan’s Island) and Dave Madden (better known as Reuben Kincaid on TV’s The Partridge Family). Both will be missed.

We also want to take a moment to acknowledge a loss that’s a little closer to home. Georgia Eaton was the mother-in-law of our own Tim Salmons and mother of his partner, Teresa Eaton. Today’s post and also Tim’s review of Mary Poppins are dedicated to her memory. Our sympathies and thoughts out to the whole Eaton family.

Here’s a look at the cover artwork for all three versions of Gravity

Stay tuned…
