As expected, Fox’s The X-Files: The Complete Series Blu-ray has been officially announced and is now back up on Fox Connect and open for pre-orders. As we reported before, SRP is $299 and street date is 12/8. But just for New York Comic-Con weekend, the price has been lowered to just $150! Now, if you order through Fox Connect, we don’t get the Amazon affiliate support… but then we’d never advise anyone NOT to take a deal that good. Our guess is that next week (post Con) it will be up for pre-order on Amazon for something in the $200-$270 range, and then it will be discounted a bit around Black Friday week. And we finally have specs! [Read on here…]

All right, as we wait for official X-Files Blu-ray news from Fox, our own Tim Salmons has just posted today’s Halloween Hangover Blu-ray review – a look at the James Clark’s Madhouse (1974), starring Vincent Price. The film is now available from Kino Lorber.

Speaking of The X-Files, there’s been no official announcement yet today, but New York Comic-Con starts tomorrow, so it’s very likely that an official announcement will be by the end of the weekend. It’s even possible that Fox will be taking pre-orders for the set this weekend tied to the Con (they frequently do at San Diego Comic-Con. So we should know more very soon. [Read on here…]

Well… we’ve waited a long time for The X-Files: The Complete Series to be released on Blu-ray. It’s been nearly three full years in fact since we first reported in The Rumor Mill here that the project was being remastered in HD for an eventual BD release. And here it finally is… almost! Fox Connect briefly revealed the cover art yesterday (see below), the SRP ($225 USD), and the street date (12/8). BUT… then they immediately pulled it down again. We would guess this means that the official announcement is imminent. So stay tuned for that. In the meantime, here’s what the packaging is going to look like…  [Read on here…]

It’s official… sort of: Warner Home Video has just announced that Brad Bird’s The Iron Giant: Signature Edition is NOW AVAILABLE for purchase on streaming, digital HD, and UltraViolet (you can watch it here on Amazon now). Before you get bent out of shape about that, however, the press release also says that the film will be available on Blu-ray Disc in 2016. As many of you know, Bird has been lobbying WB hard for the film to be released as a really good special edition on Blu-ray. It’s possible that he needs the extra time to work on the special features. So while it’s not quite the news we’ve been waiting for, it’s good to know that a Blu-ray release is coming… even if fans will have to be patient a little while longer for it.  [Read on here…]

It’s a terribly slow news day today in terms of Blu-ray and DVD-related announcements, but that’s okay. You should all just go out and see Ridley Scott’s The Martian anyway. I saw it last night and I’ll tell you, it’s his best film since the 2005 Kingdom of Heaven: Director’s Cut. The film honors Andy Weir’s original book, retaining much of its scientific accuracy and sense of humor, and it nails the real-life spirit and dedication that’s at the heart of what NASA does, getting all the little details of manned spaceflight correct – no small task. Best of all, it does all this while managing to be entertaining as hell. I absolutely loved The Martian, and it’s that rare film worth seeing in 3D too – the vast open spaces of the Red Planet have never looked so epic.  [Read on here…]

All right, we’ve got a smattering of release news odds and ends to report for you this afternoon...

But before we get started today, our very own Tim Salmons is officially kicking off his month-long Halloween Hangover review fest this afternoon here at The Bits! Each week day all month long, Tim will review a new horror or Halloween-themed title on disc. First up today is his look at Scream Factory’s Shocker: Collector’s Edition on Blu-ray. We hope you enjoy it, and be sure to check back tomorrow for more!

Now then, let’s get to the announcements: Broad Green Pictures has set A Walk in the Woods for Blu-ray and DVD release on 12/29, starring Robert Redford, Nick Nolte, and Nick Offerman.  [Read on here…]

Apparently, Cancer Man doesn’t work for 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment, because this may very well be the worst kept secret on the planet: Fox’s The X-Files: Seasons 1-9 Collection (Blu-ray) is now available for pre-order on Amazon Canada with a street date of 12/8 and an Amazon pre-order of $279.99 (Canadian dollars, mind you, which is about $210 USD – SRP is set at $399.99). Better still, Amazon.ca is ALSO showing that each season of the series (see for yourself... 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, & 9) will available separately for just $23.09 each (SRP $32.99). So you can either buy the whole smash, or just the seasons you like best! None of these SKUs are listed on Amazon US yet (and USD pricing will be slightly different), but I would expect them to appear very soon. [Read on here…]

Well… Amazon UK has essentially confirmed what we already knew, which is that Brad Bird’s remastered The Iron Giant is coming to Blu-ray soon. Amazon.co.uk has a “To Be Announced” listing for the Blu-ray SKU up. The movie comes back to theaters for event showings tomorrow and Sunday (10/4), so I would expect an official Blu-ray announcement as early as next week. The disc will certainly be available in time for the holidays. It’s kind of the perfect holiday gift title.  [Read on here…]

We’re kicking things off today with another new Blu-ray review. This one is a little unusual and should be more than a little interesting for Star Trek fans: It’s my look at Prelude to Axanar on Blu-ray, the 2014 proof-of-concept short film directed by Christian Gossett and produced by Alec Peters that launched the effort to produce the full Axanar feature film (to be directed by Robert Meyer Burnett and co-written by yours truly). Prelude to Axanar is now available on Blu-ray but ONLY as a perk for contributing $35 to the Axanar IndieGoGo campaign. You won’t find it in stores. But if you love Star Trek on Blu-ray, it’s definitely a title you’re going to want to add to your collections. Be sure to read the review to learn more about it.  [Read on here…]
