More Paramount 4K catalog, Bill & Ted 4K, Warner might be MGM’s new distributor, and RIP Ennio Morricone
All right, we’ve got a couple things to report on for you today here at The Digital Bits.
First, European retail sources have begun sending us information suggesting that a trio of additional Paramount catalog titles is on the way to physical 4K Ultra HD later this year, at least in Europe. Those titles are: Collateral (2004), Beverly Hills Cop (1984), and Coming to America (1988). I’ve asked Paramount for confirmation that they’re coming to disc here in the States as well. I’ll post an update here when and if they respond.
Meanwhile, the Italian DVD retailer DVD-Store IT has started listing them (here, here, and here) with no street date given.
Also today, call this one Rumor Mill worthy: MGM’s physical media distribution deal with 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment officially expired on 6/30, and word on the street within the industry is that Warner Bros. Home Entertainment will now pick up those rights. There’s been no official announcement of this, and as yet no news reporting on it from the other industry trades, but that’s what we’re hearing through the grapevine. More on that as it comes in too. Studio Canal reveals Bill & Ted’s Excellent Ultra HD, plus Sony’s Lawrence of Arabia 4K extras disc update
Okay, just a few quick things for you guys this afternoon, as I’ve got a stack of discs that need reviewing and there aren’t enough hours in the day (so I’d better get started)...
First, we have two new Blu-ray reviews for you to enjoy. Dennis has checked out Mary Rydell’s Even Money (2006) on disc from MVD and he’s also offered up his thoughts on William Castle’s Let’s Kill Uncle (1966) from Kino Lorber Studio Classics. Enjoy!
Now then, here’s the big news today (and it’s pretty good): Our friend Simon Brew (of the excellent Film Stories website in the UK) is reporting that Studio Canal plans to release a new 4K Ultra HD restoration of the original Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure later this year (likely in August). And indeed, the official Studio Canal UK Twitter feed has confirmed it (here).
This is no doubt tied to the theatrical release of the long-awaited sequel, Bill & Ted Face the Music, the first trailer for which can be seen below. [Read on here...]
Arrow reveals Pitch Black & Flash Gordon in 4K, plus new KL Studio Classics & Paramount Presents titles
All right, we’ve got a little surprise for you all today...
Arrow Video has just joined Team 4K! They’ve apparently licensed the North American rights from Studio Canal to Flash Gordon (1980) in the US and Canada and are delivering the film on both Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD in August. Each will be available in both regular and Limited Editions.
They’ve also licensed the rights (from Universal) to David Twohy’s Pitch Black (2000) on Blu-ray and 4K in North America and the UK and are bringing that title out in August as well!
Additional Blu-ray only titles coming in August from Arrow Video are a double feature of Yasuzo Masumura’s Black Test Car (1962) and The Black Report (1963) and Richard Driscoll’s The Comic (1985). The Comic will also be available in regular and Limited Editions. [Read on here...]

Follow @BillHuntBits on Twitter and respond to THIS TWEET by telling us which of these three films (Top Gun, War of the Worlds, or Days of Thunder) is your favorite and why. Please respond just once, and note that this giveaway is only open to US readers (due to shipping restrictions, which are especially difficult during this pandemic). Entries will be accepted until 11 AM Pacific tomorrow (Tuesday 5/19) and the winners will be announced tomorrow afternoon (and also here on the site). We’ll be running a similar contest on our Digital Bits Facebook page too later this week, so be sure to watch for the details. [Read on here...]

His Dark Materials, Criterion’s full August slate, a “new” Mad Max: Fury Road doc, SAE/Twilight Time news & more
Afternoon, folks! And welcome to Friday. Is anyone else out there as ready for the weekend as we are?
This has been a busy week of just “three steps forward two steps backward” behind-the-scenes work here at The Bits. We got a lot done, but very little of it is visible to any of you. But that’s how it goes sometimes.
We’re all working on more reviews here at the site today (and we will be through the weekend—including War of the Worlds 4K and Days of Thunder 4K), but we do have some interesting release news to report today.
First up, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment and HBO have just set His Dark Materials: The Complete First Season for release on Blu-ray and DVD on 8/4 (SRP $29.98 each). [Read on here...]
