All right, yesterday was a little crazy here at The Bits, what with Paramount finally dropping their long-awaited Star Trek 4K announcement. That deluxe Complete Adventure 4K package for the Star Trek: The Motion Picture – Director’s Edition was unexpected and frankly a fantastic surprise. But it’s worth a quick follow up today just to clarify everything...

The Star Trek: The Motion Picture – The Director’s Edition: The Complete Adventure Limited Edition is a 3-disc set here in the States that includes the DE in 4K, a newly-authored 4K of the previously-released Theatrical Cut as well as the Special Longer Version (included via seamless branching), and a Blu-ray full of bonus content that I’m told includes basically everything ever created and released for the film on home video. (I’m awaiting confirmation of the exact contents from the studio.) But it does NOT include a Blu-ray of the DE itself, nor are Blu-rays of the Theatrical and SLV versions included. The DE is available separately on Blu-ray, and obviously the Theatrical Cut Blu-ray was included in the original 4-Movie Collection from last year.

To be 100% clear, the Special Longer Version is ONLY going to be available in The Complete Adventure package, and producer David C. Fein has said that it’s a genuine limited edition. Much like Sony’s recent Ghostbusters: Ultimate Collection, it’s very likely to sell out in pre-orders, and it’s NOT going to be re-released. So if you were planning to wait for Black Friday to pick it up at a discount, or you’re expecting some future “ultimate” 4K box that includes the TNG films as well all The Complete Adventure content, you’re likely to be disappointed. The new 4K disc with both the Theatrical Cut and the Special Longer Version on it is exclusive to this set and when they’re gone, they’re gone. Be sure to plan accordingly.

[Editor’s Note: It appears that the UK version of this set MAY be a 5-disc set, which includes the Blu-rays of The Director’s Edition and the Theatrical Cut. And its discs should be all-region.]  [Read on here...]

Morning, everyone! We expect Paramount’s official announcement of the next wave of Star Trek Original Series films in 4K Ultra HD to drop at any time now, but there’s been an early leak of cover art that we thought worth sharing with you beforehand.

A couple of retailers have shared this artwork this morning (including our friends at HD Movie Source, who are always on the money), so it looks like this could be the final cover art for the forthcoming Star Trek Original Series films in 4K.

If the leak is correct, it means that Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country will indeed include both the original Theatrical Version and Nicholas Meyer’s much-loved 113-minute Director’s Cut as well. The cut is 3 minutes longer, has a few scene extensions here and there, and some of the scenes are slightly re-edited. Added material includes Admiral Cartwright and Colonel West briefing the Federation President on their rescue plan, as well as Spock and Scott inspecting the torpedo bay. [Read on here...]

All right, we’ve got some late-breaking information regarding the next wave of Star Trek 4K Ultra HD releases from Paramount.

This morning we received updated information from two of our retailer/distributor sources here in the States, which has now been confirmed by a third such source this afternoon. And the Paramount Home Entertainment PR department has gone mum, which is a pretty good indicator of the fact that an official announcement is imminent. (If the details we asked them about were false, they would normally be quick to deny them).

So here’s the latest...

It appears that Paramount is about to announce the 9/6 release of single-film 4K Ultra HD SKUs of the Star Trek: The Motion Picture – Director’s Edition, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, and Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, along with a Star Trek: The Original 6-Movie Collection 4K box set that includes all of them in one package. You can see the cover artwork at left and also below.

Paramount has also set Adrian Lyne’s Fatal Attraction (1987) for release on 4K Ultra HD on 9/13. The film stars Glenn Close and Michael Douglas. We’re awaiting official AV details and extras from the studio.

We’ve got more tentative confirmation of Star Trek 4K Ultra HD street dates from North American and international retail sources for September. In fact, the Star Trek retailer leaks are now coming in fast and furious here at The Bits today...

European retail sources are now showing 9/12 as the street date for Star Trek V: The Final Frontier in 4K Ultra HD from Paramount, which would suggest a 9/13 release date here in the States.

Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country is tentatively set to follow on 4K UHD on 9/19 in Europe (or 9/20 here in the States).

And the Star Trek: The Motion Picture – Director’s Edition is currently set to street on 9/26 (or 9/27 here in the States). [Read on here...]

Good morning, everyone. We’ve got two new disc reviews for you to check out this morning...

Stephen has taken an in-depth look at Tony Scott’s True Romance (1993) in 4K Ultra HD, as finally released here in the States by our friends at Arrow Video.

As it happens, Stephen has also checked out the US Blu-ray-only version of True Romance from Arrow, so pick your format and do give the title a look.

Today being a holiday here in the States, there’s not a ton of release news to report. But we do have a couple of quick items for you...

First, Kino Lorber Studio Classics revealed over the weekend that they’re working on a new 4K Ultra HD release of Adrian Lyne’s Indecent Proposal (1993). That’s currently set to street on 9/27, complete with a new Dolby Vision HDR grade supervised by the director. [Read on here...]

Morning, folks! We’re checking in early here at The Bits today with some new disc reviews.

Over the weekend, I managed to turn out reviews of three new 4K Ultra HD Steelbook releases, including Steven Spielberg’s Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) from Paramount, and David Lean’s Bridge on the River Kwai (1957) and Lawrence of Arabia (1962) from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.

It should be noted that the 4K Steelbook edition of Bridge on the River Kwai now includes Dolby Vision HDR and the original theatrical mono mix, both of which were missing from the 2017 4K release.

And this marks the first time Lawrence of Arabia has been available in 4K outside of Sony’s expensive (and long out-of-print) Columbia Classics 4K Ultra HD Collection: Volume 1 box set from 2020, so this will likely be the first time many of you get to experience the film in 4K UHD at home (and let me tell you, that experience is terrific).
