We’ll be back later today, but we just wanted to check in early this morning with a quick bit of announcement news that broke over the weekend...

FUNimation has set finally Katsuhiro Otomo’s landmark anime Akira (1988) for release on 4K Ultra HD on 12/22. We’ve known the title was coming for a while now (it returns to theaters here in the U.S. for a limited run on 9/24), but we finally have the official confirmation of the remastered disc release.

The title is now available for pre-order on via this link and you can see the cover artwork at left and also below.

Apparently, it’s already been released on 4K disc in Japan and there’s a bit of concern that too much DNR may have been used by the Japanese animation studio to clean the image (the title is distributed there by Bandai Namco).

But we’ll have to see what it looks like when it finally arrives on disc here in the States. [Read on here...]

The 4K disc will apparently include HDR10 high dynamic range and audio in 5.1 Dolby TrueHD in both Japanese and English.

Extras (per the FUNimation website) will reportedly include:

  • AKIRA Sound Making 2019
  • AKIRA Sound Clip by Geinoh Yamashirogumi
  • End Credits (From The Original 1988 Theatrical Release)
  • Theatrical Preview Trailer Collection (with English Subtitles)
  • Storyboard Collection

But the same page also lists the following:

  • Akira Sound Clip (1988)
  • Music for Akira
  • Kaneda’s Theme
  • Exodus
  • Ethnic Meets Hi-Tech
  • Awakening
  • Mutation
  • Requiem
  • Director Interview
  • Storyboard Collection
  • The Writing on the Wall
  • Original Trailers
  • Original Commercials
  • Restoring Akira
  • Picture
  • English Voice Over
  • English 5.1 Audio Mix
  • Glossary
  • U.S. Trailer (2013)
  • Trailers

Also today, just a quick update: Some of you may recall that, earlier this year, we reported on a new 45-minute making-of documentary for George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road that Warner Bros. Home Entertainment had quietly made available digitally to those who’d already purchased the film and owned a digital copy. Well, good news: The studio has now made it available for free viewing on YouTube. It’s called Going Mad: The Battle of Fury Road and you can watch the entire thing below. Enjoy!

That’s all for this morning. Back later with more. Stay tuned...
