In other news today, Sony held an official press conference this morning in which they revealed a few new details about their forthcoming PlayStation 4 Pro gaming console, which streets on 11/10. The first surprise is that they announced that every existing PS4 is going to be firmware updated next week to support High Dynamic Range, though they didn’t reveal exactly which format of HDR it will be: Dolby Vision or the base HDR-10 spec. The PS4 Pro will also support 4K and HDR, of course, but the second surprise is that it will NOT support 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Discs. That’s a bit unexpected, given that A) Blu-ray Disc is a Sony-developed format, and B) their rival Microsoft’s new Xbox One S console DOES support 4K, HDR-10, and UHD discs (see here). Anyway, we’ll talk more about this soon. Meanwhile, you can read more herehere, here, here, and here.

[Editor’s Note: We suspect the reason for this decision is that Sony Consumer Electronics doesn’t want Sony Interactive Entertainment’s PlayStation 4 Pro sales to undercut sales of their forthcoming dedicated 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player. It may yet be that the PS4 Pro can be firmware updated to be compatible with UHD Blu-ray Discs and could be at a later date.]

Elsewhere here at the site this afternoon, our own Russell Hammond has updated the Release Dates & Artwork section with all the latest Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray cover artwork and Amazon.com pre-order links. As always, anytime you order literally anything from Amazon after clicking through any one of our links, you’re helping to support our work here at The Bits and we appreciate it immensely.
