We’ve got a few more reviews for you today, and a few more great bits of announcement news to round out the week here…

First, Stuart has turned in his thoughts on Howard Zieff’s House Calls (1978) and Gilles Grangier’s Maigret Sees Red (1963) on Blu-ray from Kino Lorber Studio Classics.

And Dennis has offered his take on John Binder’s UFOria (1985), also on Blu-ray from KLSC.

Now then, here’s something fun: Our friends at Vinegar Syndrome have revealed they’ve licensed Joe Dante’s Explorers (1985) from Paramount and they’ve about to release a new 4K Ultra HD edition! Limited to 8,000 units, it will ship following their next Halfway to Black Friday sale that runs from May 22nd to 25th! And in addition to legacy extras, you’ll get a 40-page book and a new 77-minute documentary on the making of the film by Elijah Drenner! [Read on here...]

Here’s a 4K trailer for the release…

Also newly revealed by Vinegar Syndrome are new 4K editions of Ole Bornedal’s Nightwatch (1987), Lamberto Bava’s Macabre (1980), Alex Phillips’ Anything That Moves (2025), and a Cinématographe edition of Robert Altman’s Come Back to the 5 & Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean (1982), as well as a Something Weird + Distribpix double-feature Blu-ray of Byron Mabe’s The Lustful Turk (1968) and Peter Perry’s The Joys of Jezebel (1969).

The other big announcement today is that Sony Pictures Home Entertainment is finally doing classic Harryhausen films in 4K, starting with Nathan Juran’s The 7th Voyage of Sinbad (1958) on 7/21! All of the classic Blu-ray features should carry over. You can see the cover art for that above left.

Moving on this afternoon, the Cohen Media Group has set James Ivory’s Maurice (1987) for 4K Ultra HD release on 6/30.

Kino Lorber and KL Studio Classics will release Bill Condon’s Kiss of the Spider Woman (2025) on Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD on 6/30 as well, along with Miguel Sapochnik’s Repo Men (2010), and Joseph Sargent’s MacArthur (1977).

Eureka! has announced a new UK Blu-ray box set—Into the Forest: Folktales at DEFA—for release on July 28. It will include The Devil from Mill Mountain (1955), The Singing Ringing Tree (1957), Rumpelstiltskin (1955), Little Red Riding Hood (1962), and The Devil’s Three Golden Hairs (1977), along with a ton of extras.

A company called Icon Film Distribution is releasing David Slade’s terrific Arctic Circle vampire tale 30 Days of Night (2007) as a 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray edition in the UK on July 27.

And StudioCanal in the UK is releasing Charles Crichton’s Ealing Studios production of The Titfield Thunderbolt (1953) on 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray as part of their Vintage Classics line. Look for that on June 15.

Closer to home here in the States, 20th Century Studios—via Disney and Sony Pictures—has just upgraded David Frankel’s The Devil Wears Prada (2006) to 4K Digital on all of the usual Digital and streaming services. Sadly, there’s no sign that a 4K disc is coming at the moment.

This upgrade is no doubt meant to tie into the release of Frankel’s sequel, The Devil Wears Prada 2, which hits theatres this weekend.

Frustratingly, this is just the latest in a long list of Disney or Fox titles that have received 4K remasters and that are available in 4K Digital, but not 4K disc. So far, the list includes…

  • Planet of the Apes (1968)
  • The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951)
  • Cast Away (2000)
  • Pretty Woman (1990)
  • Con Air (1997)
  • Ever After (1998)
  • Anastasia (1997)
  • Die Hard 2: Die Harder (1990)
  • Die Hard with a Vengeance (1995)
  • Live Free and Die Hard (2007)
  • A Good Day to Die Hard (2013)
  • The Omen (1976)
  • Office Space (1999)
  • Napoleon Dynamite (2004)

And many more. But that’s a topic for another day.

Our friends at Blue Underground have finally announced the 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray release of Ralph Bakshi’s Fire and Ice (1983) on 6/30, a release that will include a 4K disc, a Blu-ray, and a CD soundtrack too. The Steelbook release will exclusively be available on MVD Shop here. (Our guess is that a wide release 4K will show up at a later date.)

And finally today, Via Vision’s Imprint Films label has just unveiled the rest of their June Imprint Asia slate of titles, which now officially includes:

  • The Swordsman Collection (1990-93) – including King Hu’s Swordsman (1990), Ching Siu-tung’s Swordsman II (1992), and Ching Siu-tung and Raymond Lee’s Swordsman III: East Is Red (1993)
  • Shaw-Shock: Shaw Brothers Horror Collection – Volume Three (1980-82) – with Kuei Chih-Hung’s Hex (1980), Hex Versus Witchcraft (1980), and Hex After Hex (1982)
  • Shaw-Shock: Shaw Brothers Horror Collection – Volume Four (1981-82) – featuring Yang Chuan’s Hell Has No Boundary (1982), Kuei Chih-Hung’s Bewitched (1981), and Sun Chung’s Human Lanterns (1982)
  • Shinji Aoyama’s Eureka (2000)
  • Casey Chan’s Face to Face (2002)
  • Akira Kurosawa’s Madadayo (1993) – Kurosawa’s final film (which I believe would be the film’s first time on Blu-ray outside of Japan)

Pre-orders open on 5/12, limited to 1500 copies each. And keep in mind, these are in addition to the previously-announced The Cinema of King Hu: Volume One box set.

All right, that’s all for now. Have a great weekend!- Bill Hunt
