Online retailer leaks Paramount’s Star Trek 4K UHD box art

Here’s a quick update with a bit of breaking news. Very early this morning, I noticed on the online retail website Bull Moose that their listing for Paramount’s Star Trek: The Original 4-Movie Collection 4K Ultra HD box set—which is now widely (yet still unofficially) known to be set for release on 9/7—had been updated to include the cover artwork you see at left (and also larger below).

After sharing this on my own personal Twitter and Facebook pages (and also on our Bits Twitter and Facebook pages), I contacted Paramount directly to ask about it. It’s now been several hours and the studio has not (as yet) responded to my inquiry. Within an hour of contacting them, however, the entire title listing (artwork and all) was pulled down by Bull Moose. But of course that artwork has already been shared far and wide online. (The Tribbles are most certainly out of the bag, so to speak.)

So here’s the deal: This now represents at least the third online retailer to leak the basic details of this release. As such, official or not, it does indeed appear that Paramount is releasing a Star Trek: The Original 4-Movie Collection box set in 4K Ultra HD on 9/7. In case you missed it when we first posted this in yesterday’s news column here at The Bits—which included a big update of the 4K UHD catalog titles we expect for the remainder of 2021—here are the details as we understand them based upon the best available information from our industry sources... “And finally, Paramount is expected to release Scream and The Addams Family on 4K Ultra HD on 10/12. (The latter will include a restored and full-length dance number.) But they’re also close to announcing the rumored and much-anticipated 4K Ultra HD release of the classic Star Trek catalog films, beginning with a 4-film box set of Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, and Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home on 9/7 (note that 9/8 is the anniversary of the TV debut of Star Trek on NBC back in 1966). These will likely include Dolby Vision HDR. Our sources indicate that Star Trek: The Motion Picture will be the original theatrical version for this first release. The rationale behind the box set seems to be that you have to start with the first film, and then films 2-4 form a coherent story trilogy. Two additional 4K sets may follow (one with Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, and Star Trek: Generations—which concludes the story of the original cast—and another with Star Trek: First Contact, Star Trek: Insurrection, and Star Trek: Nemesis—which concludes the TNG film saga). Last but not least, Paramount should finally deliver the long-awaited Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD upgrade of the Star Trek: The Motion Picture – Director’s Edition sometime in 2022. It’s likely that the studio will refresh their existing Blu-ray editions of these films with the new transfers at some point as well. We expect more on all of this to be revealed at Creation Entertainment’s The “55-Year Mission Tour” Star Trek Convention next month in Las Vegas (August 11-15 at the Rio).”

So that’s what we know at the moment. Again, we do expect that the official announcement is close at hand. In the meantime, here’s the cover art for this first set as it briefly appeared on the Bull Moose site this morning...

Suffice it to say, it’s my informed and experienced opinion that this artwork is just too oddly specific to be BS at this point.

As soon as we hear back from the studio with more, we’ll update you in this column on The Bits and on our social media.

The wait is nearly over Trek fans. [Editor’s Note: Click here late-breaking details!]

Stay tuned...
