Speaking of support, we’ve nearly hit 200 backers on our new Patreon, where I’ve been posting some good blog content over the last week, including a peek at upcoming 4K catalog titles for 2024, my initial thoughts on the new 4K remaster of James Cameron’s Titanic (which I assure you I’ll have much more to say on both here on The Bits and on Patreon), and some other interesting odds and ends.
And while we’re on the topic of Titanic, you should all be aware that Apple has just updated Digital copies of the film on AppleTV and iTunes to the new 4K master. So if any of you have it already, you can now get a peek at it before your 4K discs arrive next Tuesday (on 12/5). It’s pretty impressive, even just in Digital.
In announcement news today, Universal Pictures Home Entertainment and Blumhouse have set David Gordon Green’s The Exorcist: Believer (2023) for release on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD on 12/19, with the Digital version available on 12/1. Extras will include audio commentary (co-writer/director David Gordon Green, executive producer Ryan Turek, co-writer Peter Sattler, and special makeup FX designer Christopher Nelson) and 6 featurette (Making a Believer, Ellen and Linda: Reunited, Stages of Possession, The Opening, Editing an Exorcism, and Matters of Faith). Look for Dolby Atmos audio on both the Blu-ray and UHD release, with Dolby Vision HDR in 4K.
Kino Lorber Studio Classics has announced Fritz Lang’s Scarlet Street (1945) for release on 4K Ultra HD on 1/30, complete with a new 16-bit 4K scan of the 35 mm nitrate composite fine grain, a new audio commentary by historian Imogen Sara Smith, and the previous commentary by author David Kalat.
The company has also announced that George Stevens’ Shane (1953) is coming soon to 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray in 2024, as are new Blu-ray editions of Peter Bogdanovich’s Daisy Miller (1974), Josef von Sternberg’s Underworld (1927), and Frank Lloyd’s Blood on the Sun (1945).
Meanwhile, KLSC has officially set Alfred L. Werker’s He Walked by Night (1948) and Monk: The Complete Third Season (2004-05) for Blu-ray release on 1/30/24.
Our friends at MVD have revealed that Greydon Clark’s Joysticks (1983) is going to join Ernie Fosselius’ already announced Hardware Wars (1978) as MVD Rewind Collection Blu-ray titles on 2/20.
For fans of the Netflix series Wednesday, it appears that Wednesday: The Complete First Season is about to be released on Blu-ray Warner Bros. early next year. Street date is TBA, but it’s already up for pre-order via this link on Amazon.
Similarly, it appears that Shout! and Scream Factory will soon be announcing the 4K Ultra HD and 4K Steelbook release of their Darkman: Collector’s Edition with a street date of 2/20. You can see the Amazon links for those here and here as well.
ClassicFlix is working on the Blu-ray and DVD release of The Abbott And Costello Show: Season 2 for release on 1/30.
Lionsgate has set Neil Burger’s The Marsh King’s Daughter (2023) for Blu-ray and DVD release on 2/2.
Powerhouse Films in the UK has released their January 2024 Blu-ray slate, which will include Jamil Dehlavi’s Jinnah (1998), John Frankenheimer’s Impossible Object (1973), and John Krish’s The Man Who Had Power Over Women (1969) all on 1/23/24.
And Second Sight in the UK has set Alexandre Aja’s High Tension (2003) for release in 4K Ultra HD on December 11th, with the US release coming to Amazon on 12/8. Also coming to 4K from Second Sight are Martin Scorsese’s Mean Streets (1973) on 1/15 and Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury’s Inside (2007) on 2/5, each in regular and Limited Edition packages.
