All right, this is just a quick update, as we have work happening on the server today.

But... we’ve got final details for you – and official cover artwork – on the Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD release of Luc Besson’s Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets from Lionsgate. (We’d listed Sony as the distributor yesterday – that’s incorrect. Sorry. Loooooong day.)

In any case, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets will street on Blu-ray Combo, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD Combo on 11/21, as expected, with the Digital HD release due on 11/7. The 4K Ultra HD release will feature both Dolby Vision HDR – which should make it a real stunner – and also Dolby Atmos audio. [Read on here…]

Extras will include the multi-part Citizens of Imagination: Creating the Universe of Valerian documentary (with Paper, Ink, Flesh, Blood: Origins and Characters, To Alpha and Beyond: Production and Stunts, Denizens of the Galaxy: Humans and Aliens, The Final Element: Visual Effects, and Wrap Up), along with Enhancement Pods and an Art of Valerian photo gallery.

Unfortunately, there’s no word of a U.S. Blu-ray 3D release, which is a shame as this is a perfect title for it. BUT... Amazon.co.uk seems to have an exclusive on the Blu-ray 3D version in the U.K., so it’s quite possible that Amazon.com will have a similar U.S. exclusive on 3D. We’ll have to wait and see when it goes up for pre-order.

I’ll say this much: I’ve been reading the original Valérian and Laureline graphic novels, by French writers Pierre Christin and artist Jean-Claude Mézières, and I really liked this film. It’s not perfect. It loses momentum in a couple places, but it’s a visual stunner and a tremendously imaginative cinematic experience. Much like Besson’s The Fifth Element, I have a feeling it will gain an appreciative audience with time. And the 4K Ultra HD release should be a reference-quality demo disc. Anyway, here’s a look at the film’s opening sequence. Be sure to watch in full 1080p and turn up the volume...

And here’s a look at the Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD cover artwork. We’ll add the Amazon pre-order links as soon as they go live...

Stay tuned...
