I’m back after an unexpected day’s absence there.  I’ve been fighting a flu for the last few days and you know how that goes.  It just caught up with me yesterday.  Luckily, a day’s worth of sleep worked wonders.

To start off today, we’ve got a couple new Blu-ray reviews from Tim Salmons: Criterion’s Eyes Without a Face and La Cage aux Folles.  Methinks, somebody took advantage of Barnes & Noble’s 50% off sale.  LOL!  [Read on here…]

In announcement news today, Lionsgate has set Escape Plan for Blu-ray and DVD release on 2/4.  The film stars Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger.  Extras will include audio commentary by director Mikael Hafstrom and co-writer Miles Chapman, 3 featurettes (Executing the Plan: The Making of Escape Plan, Maximum Security: The Real-Life Tomb and Clash of the Titans), as well as deleted scenes.

By the way, Lionsgate’s Pride and Prejudice: Keepsake Edition Blu-ray (due 1/14 – SRP $29.99) will include 3 featurettes (The Definitive Pride and Prejudice, Love or Money? Courtship and Marriage in Pride and Prejudice and Lifestyles of the Wealthy in Early 19th Century England).

Disney has set Disneytoon Studios’ CG-animated The Pirate Fairy for Blu-ray release on 4/1/14.

Shout! Factory has officially set The Shadow: Collector’s Edition for Blu-ray release on 2/25 (SRP $29.93).  In addition to a new HD transfer, you’ll get new interviews with director Russell Mulcahy, Alec Baldwin and Penelope Ann Miller, production designer Joseph Nemec III, director of photography Stephen H. Burum and writer David Koepp, and the film’s trailer.

Shout! Factory and Marvel Knights Animation have also set the animated Wolverine Vs. Sabretooth for Blu-ray and DVD release on 1/14, produced by the same EP as the Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. TV series.

And Shout! has set the animated Danny Phantom: The Complete Series for DVD only release on 1/28.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has Battle of the Year due on BD and DVD on 12/10.

Severin Films and Nucleus Films has set the 3-disc remastered Video Nasties: The Definitive Guide for DVD only release in North America before the end of the year (it’s already available in the U.K.).  The set features trailers of banned films with introduction by critics and experts, along with Jake West’s Moral Panic, Censorship and Videotape documentary.  This release is the first in a new line of Video Nasties DVD releases coming in 2014.  The next title will be Grindhouse Trailer Classics: Volume 1.

Cinedigm has set I’m in Love with a Church Girl for release on Blu-ray and DVD on 1/14.

RADiUS-TWC has set the documentary 20 Feet from Stardom for Blu-ray and DVD release on 1/14.

And finally, here’s something interesting and that doesn’t surprise me a bit:  A survey of U.S. and Canadian consumers (by a market research company called Digitalsmiths) has revealed that 73% of home video customers have never rented a movie from their MVPD (multichannel video programming distributor – a fancy way of saying cable and satellite providers).  This would be single-movie transactional rentals or “on demand” movies.  Instead, most prefer monthly-fee services like Netflix where, for one monthly price, you can watch whatever you want.  Like I said, this doesn’t surprise me a bit.  People don’t like being nickel and dimed.  And they’re patient enough to wait for a movie to come to Netflix or a premium movie channel like HBO.  More on this here at Home Media.

We’ll leave you today with a look a the Blu-ray cover artwork for Lionsgate’s Escape Plan and the Pride and Prejudice: Keepsake Edition, as well as temp art for Summit Entertainment’s Ender’s Game (TBA)…
