Kino Lorber Studio Classics has just officially set Ben Stiller’s Tropic Thunder (2008) for release on 4K Ultra HD on 9/13. The 2-disc set will include a new 4K scan and restoration of the original Theatrical Cut of the film with Dolby Vision HDR, as well as the Director’s Cut on Blu-ray in the packaging. You can see the slip cover artwork at left and the Amaray insert art below.

Meanwhile, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment’s Amazon listing for the animated Batman: The Long Halloween – Deluxe Edition in 4K Ultra HD is now live for pre-orders, confirming the previously anticipated 9/20 street date. Again, the cover artwork is included below.

Also now available for pre-order on Amazon is Universal’s Minions: The Rise of Gru, which appears to be coming to Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD on 9/6 if our retail sources are to be believed.

Meanwhile, Amazon.co.uk has just posted pre-order listings for 4K Ultra HD versions of Universal’s To Kill a Mockingbird and 8 Mile. Meanwhile, Amazon.fr has a listing up for Monty Python’s The Meaning of Life in 4K. This suggests that all three titles are coming to 4K from the studio here in the States as well. And here’s one other bit of 4K intel from our sources: It appears that Paramount’s Enemy at the Gates and The Stepford Wives (2004) have recently been upgraded to 4K on Apple TV, and we’re hearing that The Saint may soon be upgraded as well. Of those, at least Enemy at the Gates seems like an obvious physical 4K UHD catalog title for Paramount in the months ahead.

Finally today, now that we’re talking Paramount, we’ve been digging into the question of what special features will be included on the Blu-ray Bonus disc that’s expected to come in the studio’s forthcoming Star Trek: The Motion Picture – The Director’s Edition: The Complete Adventure Limited Edition 4K Ultra HD package (due on 9/6).

As we revealed last week, the Director’s Edition 4K UHD disc will include the following:

• Audio Commentary with David C. Fein, Mike Matessino, and Daren R. Dochterman
• Audio Commentary by Robert Wise, Douglas Trumbull, John Dykstra, Jerry Goldsmith, and Stephen Collins
• Text Commentary by Michael and Denise Okuda
• Isolated Score

The commentary with Fein, Matessino, and Dochterman is new for the 4K, while the Wise commentary and Okuda text commentary are carried over from the original 2001 DVD release. (The isolated score appeared on the Theatrical Cut 4K last year.) Meanwhile, we know that the Theatrical Cut 4K also included the Library Computer Viewing Mode and the Audio Commentary by Michael & Denise Okuda, Judith & Garfield Reeves-Stevens, and Daren Dochterman from the 2009 Theatrical Cut Blu-ray.

We also have some details from the recent press release on the special features that will be included on the Blu-ray Bonus disc, as follows:

• The Human Adventure – An all-new 8-part documentary detailing how the Director’s Edition came to life
  • Preparing the Future – How the remastering began
  • A Wise Choice – The storied history of Robert Wise
  • Refitting the Enterprise – How the Enterprise design shaped future Federation starships

• Effects Tests
• Costume Tests
• Computer Display Graphics
• Additional legacy bonus content

All of those features, save of course for “additional legacy bonus content,” have been newly created for this 4K release. But just what that “additional legacy bonus content” is has been the subject of some interest. Well... we’ve been doing some digging with the studio this week, and now we believe we know the answer.

According to Paramount, that legacy content will include an assortment of eight Star Trek Universe featurettes, plus Additional Scenes (from 1979), Deleted Scenes (from the 1983 Special Longer Version), trailers, and TV spots. The legacy featurettes, we’re told, are meant to include essentially everything that’s ever been produced and released previously on home video for this film. Doing a little investigating, here’s what we think it includes:

• The Star Trek Universe
  • The Longest Trek: Writing the Motion Picture (HD – 10:44) – from the 2009 Blu-ray
  • Special Star Trek Reunion (HD – 9:27) – from the 2009 Blu-ray
  • Starfleet Academy SCISEC Brief 001: The Mystery Behind V’Ger (HD – 4:24) – from the 2009 Blu-ray
  • Phase II: The Lost Enterprise (SD – 13:00) – from the 2001 DVD
  • A Bold New Enterprise (SD – 30:00) – from the 2001 DVD
  • Redirecting the Future (SD – 14:00) – from the 2001 DVD
  • The New Frontier: Resurrecting Star Trek (HD – 30:01) – from the 2016 50th Anniversary Collection Blu-ray bonus disc
  • Maiden Voyage: Making Star Trek: The Motion Picture (HD – 29:13) – from the 2016 50th Anniversary Collection Blu-ray bonus disc
• Storyboards
  • Vulcan
  • Enterprise Departure
  • V’Ger Revealed
• Additional Scenes (from 1979 – 11 scenes)

If that list is correct, particularly the eight Star Trek Universe featurettes, it would indeed mean that this Complete Adventure set includes essentially everything created previously for this film extras-wise, which would be fantastic news. Now, the studio reps haven’t been able to confirm that list beyond telling us that it’s “eight legacy featurettes,” but based on our research, those are the only eight featurettes it could be. So fingers crossed.

[Editor’s Note: GREAT NEWS! Paramount has just officially confirmed that the Blu-ray Bonus Disc will include the 8 “legacy” featurettes I listed above, which means that all previous special features created for this film in past home video releases will be included in this box set.]
