Poltergeist, Lost Boys & Meaning of Life in 4K, plus Star Trek: Picard – S2, Return to Hogwarts & Directed by Walter Hill on Blu-ray & more

We’re closing out the week with a trio of new disc reviews today, including...

Tim’s look at John McNaughton’s Wild Things (1998) in 4K Ultra HD from Arrow Video.

Tim’s review of Francesco Barilli’s Hotel Fear (1979) on Blu-ray from Mono Macabro.

And Stephen’s thoughts on Makoto Shinkai’s animated Children Who Chase Lost Voices (2011) on Blu-ray from GKids via Shout! Factory.

Vinegar Syndrome has set the standard edition of Thriller: A Cruel Picture for 4K UHD release on 7/26.

VCI will release a Children Shouldn’t Play with Dead Things: 50th Anniversary Edition in 4K on 10/11.

We’ve also learned from industry sources that Poltergeist and The Lost Boys are likely to arrive in 4K from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment in October.

And here’s a surprise: European retail sources are suggesting that Universal will release Monty Python’s The Meaning of Life in 4K UHD on October as well.

Meanwhile, in regular Blu-ray news, MVD has set Disturbing Behavior and The Chocolate War for release as new MVD Rewind Collection titles on 10/11 and 9/27 respectively.

MVD will also release Patrick Read Johnson’s 5-25-77 on Blu-ray on 10/11.

Paramount will release Star Trek: Picard – Season Two on Blu-ray and Blu-ray Steelbook on 10/4.

Warner Bros. will release the documentary Harry Potter: 20th Anniversary – Return to Hogwarts on Blu-ray on 8/9.

Mill Creek Entertainment’s July slate will include BASEketball, Safe Men, and The Black Dahlia on Blu-ray on 7/12. Don’t forget they also have SeaQuest DSV: The Complete Series coming on Blu-ray on 7/19.

Kino Lorber Studio Classics has set The Oblong Box (1969) for Blu-ray release on 9/6, along with Twice-Told Tales (1963) and He Who Must Die (1957). And KLSC is also working on a new Paravision Dreams: The Golden Age 3-D Films of Pine and Thomas Blu-ray 3D box set that will include Sangaree (1953), Those Redheads from Seattle (1953), and Jivaro (1954). All three were released previously (with restorations by the 3-D Film Archive) but have since gone out of print, so here’s another chance to get your hands on them. Street date is “coming soon” and we’ll post more as it comes in.

And here’s something exciting: Via Vision Entertainment has announced a new Imprint Films Blu-ray box set for release in July, and it’s none other than Directed by Walter Hill (1975-2006), which will include Hard Times (1975), The Driver (1978), The Long Riders (1981), Extreme Prejudice (1987), Johnny Handsome (1989), and Broken Trail (2006). Street date is TBA, but August seems likely. The set is limited to 1500 copies and you can see the open packaging below...

Also, GKids has just announced that they’ve acquired the North American theatrical and home video distribution rights to Evangelion: 3.0+1.01 Thrice Upon a Time. The fourth and final installment of the new “Rebuild” editions, the film will arrive in theaters here in late 2022 and will debut afterwards on Blu-ray and DVD.
