In fact, the big announcement news here at The Bits today is news we first broke on our Patreon page back in October of last year (click here), and I mentioned it again in my Patreon Video Blog update on Saturday: Disney has just officially set the 4K Ultra HD release of their original 2002 animated Lilo & Stitch for 5/6! The film has been fully restored and remastered by the Disney Film Preservation team, with HDR10 high dynamic range and a Dolby Atmos sound mix on a 66GB disc. And the image will be framed at the proper 1.66:1 aspect ratio. [Editor’s Note: Disney has just informed us that this title will include Dolby Vision HDR as well.]
Here’s a surprise: It’s packaged in a standard Elite case and not a Steelbook! Extras will include deleted scenes, audio commentary with director Chris Sanders, co-director Dean DeBlois, and producer Clark Spencer, 5 featurettes (including Hula Lesson, Animating the Hula, A Stitch in Time, Behind-the-Music, and DisneyPedia: The Islands) and a pair of music videos. Here’s the cover artwork...
Oh, but that’s not all today: Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment has just officially set Bong Joon Ho’s Mickey 17 (2025) for Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD release on 5/13. The Digital release will be available on 4/8. The title will be available in both regular Elite packaging as well as a Steelbook. Look for the 4K to include both Dolby Vision HDR and Dolby Atmos audio. Extras will include a trio of featurettes (Behind the Lens: Bong Joon Ho’s Mickey 17, Mickey 17: A World Reimagined, and The Faces of Niflheim).
Speaking of WBDHE, it looks like the studio is going to be re-issuing 4K Steelbook singles of all three The Lord of the Rings films on 5/27.
And back to Powerhouse Films for a moment: The company is now holding a Spring Sale on their website here, including lots of great Indictaor Blu-ray and 4K titles.
Finally today, old friend Kevin Smith has just announced that he’s bringing Dogma (1999) back to theaters on June 5th, but he’s actually going on tour with it across the country first, starting on Easter Sunday (naturally, that’s 4/20)! Smith recently managed to wrest control of the film back from the Weinsteins and it’s been remastered in 4K in honor of its 25th anniversary. You can get tickets here at the film’s official website, which looks pretty nifty. We’re confident that a 4K disc release is forthcoming as well. The question is from which studio or boutique label. We’ll post an update when we know more.
All right, here’s a look at the cover artwork for some of the titles mentioned above and many more, all with Amazon pre-order links if available...
Stay tuned...!
