All right, the big news so far today is that Sony Pictures Home Entertainment and Netflix have just set House of Cards: The Complete Fifth Season for release on Blu-ray and DVD on 10/3.

Sony has also announced the return of a classic holiday TV special to DVD in the form of a new Emmet Otter’s Jug-Band Christmas: 40th Anniversary Edition. Extras will include the Behind the Scenes in Frogtown Hollow featurette, deleted and alternate scenes, outtakes, and a lost song (Born in a Trunk).

In addition to Vice Versa and Night of the Living Dead, which we’ve mentioned in the last few days, Mill Creek is also releasing Mary Reilly on Blu-ray on 10/17 and a Suspect: 30th Anniversary Edition on 9/12. You can see the cover artwork below. [Read on here…]

Paramount is re-issuing a lot more of its catalog titles on Blu-ray, including the holiday titles Planes, Trains & Automobiles and Scrooged on 10/10, this time with DVD and Digital HD in the same package.

Image Entertainment will release Pilgrimage, starring Tom Holland and Richard Armitage, on Blu-ray and DVD on 10/10.

Well Go USA has set Na Hyun’s The Prison for release on Blu-ray and DVD on 9/19. The company has also set Iron Protector for release on Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital on 9/5.

Aussie distributor Umbrella Entertainment and Madman Films have announced that they’re releasing the classic film documentary Not Quite Hollywood on Blu-ray for the first time. Street date is TBA.

And Kino Lorber has announced a new Blu-ray and DVD double feature of Platoon Leader and Soldier Boyz. Street date is also TBA. On 10/31, the company will release Paul Wendkos’ Cannon for Cordoba (1970).

We’d also like to take a moment today to acknowledge the passing of Japanese stuntman and actor Haruo Nakajima, who was the first actor to play Godzilla and did so in every film in the series up until Godzilla vs. Gigan in 1972. He was 88. Haruo-san also worked with director Akira Kurosawa on Stray Dogs, Seven Samurai, and The Hidden Fortress. A worthy giant monster among mere mortals, and he’ll be missed. You can read more here at The New York Times.
