Afternoon, everyone.  We should have that review of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey – Extended Edition for you tomorrow.  However, the Cliff’s Notes version (for those of you wanting to know if you should buy it or not) is that the A/V quality is excellent, the extended footage doesn’t really add up to much (though there are a couple of nice character-enhancing moments), but the 9-hours worth of documentary material is terrific and well worth buying the disc for all by itself if you’re a Rings or Hobbit fan.  [Read on here…]

All right, couple things today…

First, I’ve got that Blu-ray review I promised yesterday: My thoughts on Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel, coming in HD from Warner on 11/12.  I know this film divided movie geeks over the summer, but I have no uncertainty in my feelings for it.  I think it’s a great take on the mythos and a rare superhero film that I’m actually excited about.  And the Blu-ray’s not half bad either.  Do check it out.  [Read on here…]

Okay, we’ll be back later today with our regular post, but this was too good not to jump in with it immediately.  For about the next 13 hours, Amazon.com is running a “Gold Box Deal of the Day” on Fox’s complete Alien Anthology Blu-ray box set and also the 2-disc Prometheus on Blu-ray – just $20 for the box and $10 for Prometheus!  The Alien Anthology box is one of the best special edition box sets ever produced, created by our old friend Charles de Lauzirika.  So if you’ve been looking at it and haven’t picked it up yet, today’s the day.  You’ll never get a better price than $20!

Back later!  Stay tuned…

The Hell Plaza Oktoberfest Se7en!

About a month ago, I received an anonymous package.  Well, anonymous except for The Digital Bits logo in the return address and a single word scrawled across the side: “GLUTTONY”.

“What’s in the box?” I yelled out loud to nobody in particular.  I opened it and was horrified by its contents.  It was full of DVDs and Blu-rays, all horror movies.  Oh, and Gwyneth Paltrow’s severed head, which I thought was kind of odd.  [...]

Okay... today’s Bits post is a very quick one, as we’re gearing up for tomorrow’s big Halloween finale for The Hell Plaza Oktoberfest Se7en.   BUT...

The mad Dr. Jahnke’s Oktoberfest review for today is a gem – a preview of an upcoming DVD release from our very dear friend Bob Burns.  It’s Bob Burns’ Hollywood Halloween!  The 2-disc set looks back at all the great Halloween haunted houses that Bob and Kathy have held over the years at their home in Burbank!  It includes a documentary by Lindsey Keith Jackson, footage of the actual haunted house experiences, interviews with the likes of John Landis, menus produced by our friend Van Ling, cover art by Vincent Di Fate and much more!  The DVD is not quite ready for wide release yet, and distribution is still TBA.  BUT...  [Read on here...]

Today’s Oktoberfest giveaway is happening over on the Jahnke’s Electric Theater Facebook page and features a copy of Anchor Bay’s Halloween: 35th Anniversary Edition, so be sure to head over there for your chance to win!

Today’s Hell Plaza Oktoberfest review is Adam’s look at Scream Factory’s Q: The Winged Serpent on Blu-ray, so be sure to check that out.

And note that tomorrow’s review and giveaway feature the same title and it’s something really special – a rare and cool Halloween-themed DVD title that isn’t yet even available in stores, but we’ll have TWO copies to give away so be sure to check back then.  [Read on here…]
