PART 2: THE ROADSHOW ENGAGEMENTS
Presented here is a chronological listing of Gone With the Wind’s “hard ticket” roadshow engagements in the United States and Canada. These were special showcase presentations prior to the film being exhibited as a general release, and they featured advanced admission pricing, reserved seating, an overture/intermission/entr’acte/exit music, an average of two scheduled screenings per day, and a souvenir program booklet.
Out of hundreds of films released during 1939/40, Gone With the Wind was among only a few that were given this deluxe treatment. The duration of these engagements, measured in weeks, has been included for most of the entries to give a sense of how successful the film was in its first phase of release. It should be noted the majority of engagements that commenced during the period of March through July 1940 were three- or four-day bookings, though their duration figures have been rounded to a week in the chronological listing.
The list focuses on the principal cities of each of the then 48 U.S. states and the major Canadian provinces and excludes, with a few exceptions, cities below a population of 10,000. The key cities of Alaska and Hawaii (then U.S. territories) have been included, as well.
The policy in regard to reserved or unreserved seating varied by locale, but the most common policy in effect during this release was an unreserved matinee and reserved-seat evening screening, with the average adult ticket price for any reserved-seat screening being $1.10 plus-minus a couple of cents depending on each state’s sales tax rate. This was more than double the cost of admission for a typical non-roadshow movie and which adjusts for inflation to nearly $19.00. (No wonder it’s the box-office champ!)
