Before we begin this afternoon, our own Tim Salmons has turned in another Pick-Ups Blu-ray review for you to check out, this time featuring a look at Synapse Films' Steelbook release of Dario Argento’s Tenebrae (1982). Do check that out here.

All right, the big news today is that Paramount has just officially announced the 6/7 release of the Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan – Director’s Edition on Blu-ray (as we first revealed here on The Digital Bits a few weeks ago). The film itself has been remastered from a new 4K scan, with the participation of director Nicholas Meyer, and will be included on the disc in 1080p in both the original theatrical cut and the slightly longer Director’s Cut, each with 7.1 Dolby TrueHD audio.  [Read on here…]

The set will also include a brand new 30-minute documentary on the making of the film, called The Genesis Effect: Engineering The Wrath of Khan. Beyond that, it appears that all of the legacy special features will carry over too, including audio commentary by Meyer (on both versions), a second commentary by Meyer and Manny Coto (on the theatrical version), text commentary by Michael and Denise Okuda (on the Director’s Cut), the Library Computer feature (on the theatrical version), 4 Production featurettes (including Captain’s Log, Designing Khan, Original Interviews with DeForest Kelley, William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, and Ricardo Montalban, Where No Man Has Gone Before: The Visual Effects of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, and James Horner: Composing Genesis), 3 The Star Trek Universe featurettes (includes Collecting Star Trek’s Movie Relics, A Novel Approach, and Starfleet Academy: The Mystery Behind Ceti Alpha VI), A Tribute to Ricardo Montalban, a storyboard gallery, and the film’s theatrical trailer. What’s more, the packaging’s cover will feature Tyler Stout’s Mondo poster artwork for the film. You can see it at left there and below. There’s no word yet on the expected 4K Ultra HD release of the film, though sources tell us that it’s possible for release later this year.

In other news today, Warner and TNT are releasing The Last Ship: The Complete Second Season on Blu-ray and DVD on 5/3 (SRP $49.99 and $39.99). Extras on the Blu-ray will include 5 behind-the-scenes featurettes (The Making of Season Two, Inside the Episodes, The Navy, Season 1 Recap, and Vulture Team: An Exclusive Look at the Making of Season 2), along with 5 Character Pieces (with actors Eric Dane, Adam Baldwin, Rhona Mitra, John Pyper Ferguson, and Bren Foster). Note that Season Three premieres on TNT on 6/12.

Also, Blue Underground has set a 3-film Killer Thrillers Collection for Blu-ray release on 7/26 (SRP $39.98), including Baba Yaga (1973), Night Train Murders (1974), and Strip Nude for Your Killer (1975). Each will include a nice batch of new and legacy special features. You can see the cover artwork below.

Universal has set Eye in the Sky for Blu-ray Combo and DVD release on 6/28.

For you UK Blu-ray fans, Arrow Video has set director Nico Mastorakis’s The Zero Boys for BD/DVD release on 4/25.

Also coming to the UK on Blu-ray from Eureka is the Masters of Cinema title Edvard Munch: A Film by Peter Watkins. Look for it on disc in the UK on 6/13.

Finally today, Fox has made available a new Blu-ray bundle on Amazon.com that includes The X-Files: The Complete Series box set along with The X-Files: The Event Series all for SRP $299.99. It’s available on 6/14, the same day as the stand-alone The X-Files: The Event Series set. Here’s the cover artwork...
