Criterion’s May slate, Amazon/Disney issues, Ocean Waves & more

We’ve got a pair of new 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray reviews for all of you to enjoy here at The Bits today. I’ve given Warner’s The Accountant and Sony’s Inferno a spin on the format, both of which are recent releases, and have a few things to say about each. Do give them a look.

Also today, it’s become fairly clear that Amazon and Disney are having another one of their strange business tiffs that involves Amazon pulling all of Disney’s forthcoming Blu-ray titles off of pre-order. Case in point, Moana, Doctor Strange, etc. This may also be why Disney and Lucasfilm have not yet announced the Blu-ray release of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, even though it’s already available for pre-order on other retail sites. While they no doubt have their reasons, these actions are a major inconvenience to both Amazon’s customers and Disney’s Blu-ray consumers, so these two companies should get their act together. In announcement news today, Criterion has just unveiled their May release slate, which is set to include Chantal Akerman’s Jeanne Dileman, 23, Quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles (Cat #484 – Blu-ray and DVD) on 5/9, Orson Welles’ Othello (Cat #870 – Blu-ray and DVD) and Yasujiro Ozu’s Good Morning (Cat #85 – Blu-ray and DVD) on 5/16, Jacques Audiard’s Dheepan (Cat #871 – Blu-ray and DVD) on 5/23, and Terry Zwigoff’s Ghost World (Cat #872 – Blu-ray and DVD) and Martin Scorsese’s World Cinema Project No. 2 (Cat #873 – Dual Format Blu-ray/DVD) on 5/30.

Universal has announced the Blu-ray and DVD release of Studio Ghibli’s animated Ocean Waves on 4/18.

Scream Factory has set Willard and Ben for release on Blu-ray on 5/16.

Shout! Factory has set Never to Young to Die for Blu-ray and DVD release on 4/11, starring John Stamos, Vanity, and Gene Simmons.

The Warner Archive has announced that they’re bringing Batman: The Brave and the Bold – Complete Season Three and The Valley of Gwangi (1969) to Blu-ray in the weeks ahead. Street dates should be available soon.

Kino Lorber Studio Classics has announced that they’re working on a new Blu-ray and DVD release of The Spiral Staircase (1946). The street date is TBA.

Major League Baseball has announced the 2016 World Series: The Complete Game 7 – Ultimate Edition for release on Blu-ray and DVD on 5/9.

While we’re talking sports, ESPN has set several of their ESPN Films 30 for 30 documentaries for release on Blu-ray on 4/25, including Believeland, The Book of Manning, Or Miracles and Men, Bad Boys, and Unguarded.

And National Geographic’s Mars is now due on Blu-ray and DVD on 4/11.
