CES 2016 – Warner Home Video announces plans to release 35 Ultra HD Blu-ray titles in 2016

Ahead of this week’s CES convention in Las Vegas, Warner Home Video has announced that it will release some 35 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray titles in 2016, all with high dynamic range, including 4 at launch (likely in February). The launch titles will include Mad Max: Fury Road, San Andreas, The Lego Movie, and Pan. Additional catalog titles planned for release later in the year will include Man of Steel and Pacific Rim. And the studio expects to release theatrical new release titles on UHD BD day and date with regular Blu-ray and DVD. Select titles will include Dolby Atmos audio. [Read on here…]

We’re gearing up here at The Bits this week for the impending Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, where we’ll take a good hard look at Ultra HD Blu-ray and format-related developmentsin 4K. We should hear news of official 4K title announcements, get our first good look at actual consumer players and hardware (including specs and pricing), and learn about studio and CE industry plans for the format’s rollout in February and beyond. Sony has just announced a partnership with Dolby Labs for the use of its Dolby Vision High Dynamic Range (HDR) mastering process in forthcoming Sony 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray releases (read the press release here at Business Wire). No titles have been announced yet, but based on the studio’s recent 4K remastering work you can reasonably expect such titles as The Fifth Element, Léon: The Professional, Bram Stoker’s Dracula, American Hustle, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Fury, Lawrence of Arabia, and more… eventually. Blu-ray News – An Ultra HD Blu-ray update from the Blu-ray Disc Association

This morning, I had the chance to participate in a virtual roundtable discussion featuring Victor Matsuda, the Blu-ray Disc Association’s Global Promotions Committee Chair, Paul Erickson, Senior Analyst for IHS Technology, and TK Arnold of Home Media Magazine. The session started with a video presentation in which the group discussed the outlook for UHD BD and confirmed that licensing of the format spec is going to begin very soon, which means the first official UHD BD players and movie titles could appear by year’s end. Tim has taken a look at Richard Fleischer’s Violent Saturday, a 1955 pulpy crime drama now available on Blu-ray from the fine folks at Twilight Time. It’s back to business as usual as we start the New Year!
As some of you may be aware, today marks the kickoff of the 2015 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, and it appears that 4K is going to be all the rage this year. There are a ton of manufactures showing off new 4K UHD TVs in all shapes and sizes – even more curved and flexible offerings, as well as OLEDs, and displays using new ‘Quantum Dot’ technology (more on that in a minute) – and this finally appears to be the year when they’re going to become affordable, as regular 1080p HDTVs get dirt cheap. In announcement news today, MGM has announced that it’s celebrating its 90th anniversary with new 4K restorations of some of its best films, including Rocky, Rain Man, Fargo, RoboCop and The Good, The Bad and The Ugly and is releasing them on Blu-ray. RoboCop is already available and most of the others are already available for pre-order on Amazon.com. Meanwhile, they’re releasing other titles on Blu-ray like In the Heat of the Night, A Chrous Line, The Birdcage and others. [Read on here…]

First up, Warner Home Video has finally announced a pair of catalog Blu-ray titles to get excited about: The Big Red One and Memphis Belle are on the way on 5/16 (SRP $19.98 each). [Editor’s Note: We’ve checked with Warner Home Video sources and have confirmed that The Big Red One contains a remastered version of the film’s 113-minute Theatrical Cut in HD and – as a ‘special feature’ – the 169-minute Reconstruction version in SD only as well. That’s official, so FYI and make your plans accordingly.] Check out the cover artwork below. One assumes that any extras that were on the DVDs will carry over. [Read on here…]
