Morning Bits-ers. We’ve got a quick early post today with some news relevant to James Cameron’s The Abyss.

At a special event last night in LA, Cameron screened a 2K DCP (sourced from the new 4K remaster) of The Abyss: Special Edition as part of the annual Beyond Fest film festival. Word from people who attended was that it looked fantastic.

At the end of the screening, Cameron participated in a Q&A with the audience.

Knowing that this would be happening—and that someone would almost certainly ask about the 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray release—I put out a call on social media yesterday for any readers who might be attending to record the relevant portion of the Q&A for all to see.

And I’m pleased to say that Bits reader Chuck Pennington did just that and has posted it on YouTube. (Thank you, Chuck!) You’ll find it below the break… [Read on here...]

Here’s the portion where an audience member asks Cameron about the 4K release…

The audio quality if a little rough, but here’s what Cameron says specifically:

“We did the transfer, all the mastering is done, I think it drops pretty soon. Like in a couple months—it’s out of my hands. There’s a lot of added material that they’re sticking in there, and it will be available on streaming simultaneously. But I didn’t just want to look at the old HD transfer. I wanted to do it right. And I kind of had a day job getting Avatar 2 done.”

So with Titanic getting listed on Amazon just this week (see yesterday’s post—and our understanding is that there will be both a 4K UHD and Blu-ray re-issue on 12/5), we would expect that to be officially announced by Paramount very soon. And it’s reasonable to assume that we’ll be hearing more about the 4K release of The Abyss and True Lies from 20th Century Studios and Disney as well in the coming weeks.

And for the record, I am hearing that both the Theatrical Cut and Special Edition will be included with The Abyss.

Stay tuned…
