We begin our Friday My Two Cents installment here at The Bits with a trio of new disc reviews…

Stephen has turned in his in-depth thoughts on George Stevens’ 1956 Hollywood classic Giant, starring James Dean, Rock Hudson, and Elizabeth Taylor, as recently released on 4K Ultra HD by Warner Bros.

Also, Dennis has checked in with this thoughts on Lyndall Hobbs’ Back to the Beach (1987) from Paramount and Joe Wiezycki’s Satan’s Children (1974) from AGFA and Something Weird Video.

Now then, the big release news today is that Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has finally officially announced two major catalog titles for 4K Ultra HD...

First, they’ve just set Tobe Hooper’s Poltergeist (1982) for release on 4K UHD and Digital on 9/20. The disc will feature HDR10 high dynamic range, with the previous 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack. The package will include the previous Blu-ray extras on disc, including They Are Here: The Real World of Poltergeists, Part 1 – Science of the Spirits, They Are Here: The Real World of Poltergeists, Part 2 – Communing with the Dead, The Making of Poltergeist, and the film’s theatrical trailer.

And of course, the studio has just officially set Joel Schumacher’s The Lost Boys (1987) for release on 4K Ultra HD and Digital on 9/20 as well. Once again, you’ll get HDR10 high dynamic range and the previous 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack. Both the 4K disc and the Blu-ray in the package will include audio commentary with Schumacher. The Blu-ray will also add 9 featurettes (The Lost Boys: A Retrospective, Inside the Vampire’s Cave: A Director’s Vision, Inside the Vampire’s Cave: Comedy vs. Horror, Inside the Vampire’s Cave: Fresh Blood – A New Look at Vampires, Inside the Vampire’s Cave: The Lost Boys Sequel?, Vamping Out: The Undead Creations of Greg Cannon, The Return of Sam and the Frog Brothers: Haimster & Feldog – The Story of the 2 Coreys, The Return of Sam and the Frog Brothers: Multi-Angle Video Commentary by Corey Haim, Corey Feldman and Jamison Newlander, and The Lost Scenes), plus Lou Gramm’s Lost in the Shadows music video, and the film’s theatrical trailer.

Also, be aware that Sony’s Columbia Classics 4K Ultra HD Collection: Volume 3 box set is also now available for pre-order on Amazon (street date 10/25) and it’s likely to sell out in pre-orders, as the previous two sets have done. So if you want it, don’t hesitate (FYI, Amazon’s usual 30% discount should kick in soon—if you order it now, you should get the discount price when it’s applied). By the way, Warner has also set the animated Mortal Kombat Legends: Snow Blind for Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD release on 10/11. Extras on each will include audio commentary with director Rich Morales and screenwriter Jeremy Adams, 2 featurettes (Kenshi: From the Video Game to Mortal Kombat Legends: Snow Blind and Adapting Evil: Building the Black Dragon Clan), and deleted animatics.

It appears that Warner and DC are releasing their animated DC League of Super-Pets on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD on 10/4 as well.

And you may recall that we mentioned the other day that Paramount had just made Walter Hill’s 48 Hours (1982) and Another 48 Hours (1990) available in 4K Digital on various streaming services. Well, now we have word from multiple retail sources that the first film is likely coming to physical 4K Ultra HD in December (tentatively on 12/6).

In news around the industry this afternoon, Kino Lorber is celebrating the birthday of filmmaker Alfred Hitchcock (tomorrow) by streaming eleven of his classic films on their Kino Now service. These include “restored versions of Blackmail (1929), Hitchcock’s first sound film; the courtroom mystery Murder! (1930); the silent comedies Champagne and The Farmer’s Wife (1928); the romantic melodramas The Ring (1927) and The Manxman (1929); a stirring drama about the class conflict between two British families, The Skin Game (1931); the mystery thriller Number Seventeen (1932); the madcap romantic adventure Rich and Strange (1931); and two rare short films made by Hitchcock during World War II: Bon Voyage and Aventure Malgache (1944).”

Also, it appears that Paramount is planning to launch their Paramount+ streaming service in Italy in September. You can read more here via The Hollywood Reporter.

And that’s it for this week. Have a great weekend and we’ll see you back here on Monday!
