All right, there’s not much release news today, but our own Tim Salmons has delivered his penultimate Blu-ray review of Halloween Hangover, and it’s a look at Arrow Video’s Region B release of The ’Burbs! Do check that out. First things first today... we’ve got another great new catalog Blu-ray review from our own Jim Hemphill. He’s taken a look at King Vidor’s Solomon and Sheba (1959), now available on Blu-ray from Twilight Time. Do give it a read.

For you Star Wars fans this afternoon, there’s a new Korean trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens circulating around the Net today, though it appears to have only one or two new shots. Still, you can watch it below.  [Read on here…]

The big news today is that Disney and Marvel have now officially set Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron for Blu-ray 3D Combo, Blu-ray Combo and DVD release on 10/2, with the digital release expected on 9/8. Extras on the Blu-ray seem to still be TBA, but are expected to include audio commentary, deleted scenes, a series or “making of” featurettes, and a gag reel. Comic-Con 2015 is a wrap and there’s plenty of good geek news to report for you today!

First though, our own Mario Boucher posted a new Inside Cinema column back on Thursday (in case you missed it) looking back at The Terminator films. Do check it out.

Now then... our Digital Bits Comic-Con panel went very well on Thursday afternoon! We had a packed room with lots of Bits readers asking great questions about Blu-ray. Our friend Charles de Lauzirika revealed that he’s officially working on the forthcoming Blu-ray of Ridley Scott’s The Martian. Cliff Stephenson is busy working on the Hannibal: Season Three Blu-ray for Lionsgate. And of course Robert Meyer Burnett has just completed the Prelude to Axanar Blu-ray for backers of that project on Kickstarter. Rob is also working with executive producer Alec Peters and myself on the full Star Trek: Axanar feature film – Rob is going to direct the film and I’m co-writing it with Alec. (As it happens, Charles de Lauzirika is helping to produce the film, and Cliff is going to produce the forthcoming Blu-ray special features, so quite literally everyone on our Bits panel is involved in the Axanar project.) Anchor Bay Entertainment has set The Walking Dead: The Complete Fifth Season for Blu-ray and DVD release on 8/25 (SRP $79.99 and $69.98). That’s the regular edition and, as always, there will be another McFarlane Toys Limited Edition too that will be announced shortly.  [Read on here…]

We’ve got a couple things for you today to close out the week. First though, I wanted to direct you all to our own Michael Coate’s latest History, Legacy & Showmanship column, which we posted yesterday, which features a great look back at The Empire Strikes Back in celebration of the film’s 35th anniversary (which was yesterday). Michael offers lots of extensively-researched details about the film’s initial theatrical release, as well as production trivia, a summary of critic reviews, and even a great new roundtable interview with cinema historians about the film. Well... the last 24 hours have been a little crazy for movie fans, haven’t they? I attended Star Wars Celebration in Anaheim yesterday for the big panel of the morning, at which the new Episode VII teaser trailer was revealed by producer Kathleen Kennedy and director J.J. Abrams. Some background on my personal experience: The night before, great friends both old and new gathered for a pre-convention dinner. My wife Sarah and I were there, along with veteran Blu-ray producers Charles de Lauzirika and Cliff Stephenson, and Alec Peters and Diana Kingsbury of Propworx and Star Trek: Axanar fame. (Unable to attend because of work, BD producer Robert Meyer Burnett was there in spirit.) We learned that fans had actually started lining up to attend the panel earlier that morning so, somehow or other, it was decided that we should probably get in line ourselves around 5 AM in order to make sure we made it into the room. And, somehow or other, everybody was game for it. So get in line we did, along with thousands of others: Myself, Alec, Diana, Charlie and Cliff, joined by Chris Gore of Film Threat. Okay… we’ve got a good bit of ground to cover for you guys today as the dust begins to settle from another Comic-Con, so let’s get right to it.

All right, first up today I wanted to let you all know that although The Bits is going to be at San Diego Comic-Con this month, a combination of personal/real-life business and other factors means we aren’t doing our regular Blu-ray and DVD panel event this year. Frankly, I think many of us just needed a break from the usual “demise of discs” commiseration, and wanted a chance instead to go down to the Con and just enjoy it in a more relaxed way.

That said, all the usual Bits suspects will be down in San Diego on Thursday and Friday. Before and after the Con, I’ll be reporting here at The Bits on all the BD-related news. You can expect details on TV Batman, lot of new Shout! and Scream Factory titles, the upcoming Twin Peaks BD set and much more. [Read on here…]
