[UPDATED WITH PARAMOUNT STATEMENT] – Yellow Alert! Amazon France lists Star Trek I-IV set for 4K Ultra HD in September, plus new Paramount Presents BDs
All right, so we’re going to be back later today with some more new disc reviews, but there’s some potentially significant news breaking at the moment that I wanted to address posthaste this morning.
You remember how I said yesterday that I’d been interviewed for an article on Trek Report about the potential for the classic Star Trek films to be remastered and released in 4K Ultra HD? And I also said that I’d circle back to the subject, but that essentially there was no new news to report at this time?
So the short of what I indicated in the interview was that Paramount definitely wanted to remaster all of the classic Trek films in 4K, and that they’ve clearly ramped up their catalog releases on BD and 4K during the pandemic, and are continuing to remaster their classic catalog films. It was simply a matter of cost, but it was my belief that they’d get around to it eventually. Just don’t hold your breath, right? I mean, how many times have we heard that they were talking about it, and then nothing ever happens? So, sound advice.
And then just this morning, Amazon France dropped a listing for a box set of the first four Star Trek films in 4K Ultra HD with a street date of September 8. [Read on here...]

We’ve got just another quick news update here today, as I’m diving into some long overdue work on new disc reviews...
Speaking of which, Tim has shared his thoughts on Augusto Caminito and Klaus Kinski’s Nosferatu in Venice (1988) as recently released on Blu-ray by Severin Films. You’ll find that here.
In announcement news today, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment and HBO have just set His Dark Materials: The Complete Second Season for release on Blu-ray and DVD on 6/29. The season is already available for streaming viewing on HBO Max. In addition to all 7 episodes, extras will include 11 behind-the-scenes featurettes (Noble Rogue: The Legend of Lee Scoresby (exclusive to Blu-ray and DVD), Exploring His Dark Materials: Panserbjørne, Exploring His Dark Materials: Daemons, Exploring His Dark Materials: Portals & The Multiverse, Exploring His Dark Materials: Witches, His Dark Materials: Bringing Daemons and Bears to Life, His Dark Materials: Exploring Cittàgazze, His Dark Materials: Worlds Collide, The Powerful Mrs. Coulter, Lyra, and The Subtle Knife). Criterion’s April slate, plus new 4K catalog coming from Paramount & Severin, and new catalog Blu-ray titles too
Hey everyone! Well... another week is officially in the can and, as promised, I’ve got an update for you on some release news and whatnot.
First up, I wanted to alert you to a 4K Ultra HD deal: Amazon currently has Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite available in 4K for just $11.00 for a limited time only. So click here to order a copy if you’re interested.
Also today, we’ve got a great new History, Legacy & Showmanship column from our own Michael Coate—one that was delayed from the very end of 2020 due to all of the site maintenance we’ve been doing over the past several weeks. This one is a terrific look back at the early 70mm cut of The Empire Strikes Back, featuring a new roundtable discussion with historian and soundtrack producer Mike Matessino along with director Saul Pincus. We think you’ll really enjoy it, so do give that a look here.
Now then, in announcement news today, Severin Films has revealed that it’s working on a new 4K Ultra HD release of Alejandro Jodorowsky’s Santa Sangre (1989) that’s due on 4/27. The title will also be released on Blu-ray and DVD. You can see the cover artwork for the 4K at left. Click here to pre-order on Amazon: 4K, Blu-ray, DVD.
But that’s not the only 4K catalog title we now know is coming from our retail sources... [Read on here...]

Scream’s Prince of Darkness 4K, plus Blade 4K official & The Godfather films are confirmed for UHD (in 2022)
All right, we have some great release news to report for you all today...
But first, we also have another new Blu-ray review: Tim has taken a look Bruno Mattei’s Cruel Jaws (1995) on Blu-ray from Severin Films. You’ll find that here.
Now then, that news we mentioned...
Our friends at Shout! and Scream Factory have just announced the 4K Ultra HD release of John Carpenter’s Prince of Darkness: Collector’s Edition on 1/19. The 4K/Blu-ray package will carry an SRP of $34.98. The 4K disc itself will include Dolby Vision and HDR10 high dynamic range, along with a new Dolby Atmos audio mix. All of the existing extras from Scream’s excellent Blu-ray release will carry over. You can see the cover artwork at left and also below. [Read on here...]

Godfather Coda, LOTR/Hobbit 4K update, ClassicFlix’s Our Gang restoration, RIP Helen Reddy & Borat 2
We’ve a couple good things to report again today here at The Bits...
First, though, I posted my review of Zack Snyder’s 300 in 4K Ultra HD from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment last night here at the site. It’s a 2K DI upsample, but let me just say that HDR and especially the new Dolby Atmos mix make a significant difference. If you’re a fan, the disc is well worth a look.
Now then, Paramount has officially announced the 12/8 Blu-ray and Digital release of Mario Puzo’s The Godfather, Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone. The package will include a new introduction by director Francis Ford Coppola, and a Digital Copy.
You can see the cover artwork above right and also below. [Read on here...]

Collateral is officially set for 4K on 12/8, plus new Imprint Films catalog Blu-rays for December & more
Afternoon, folks! Hope you all had a lovely weekend.
We’ve got some new disc reviews for you to enjoy today...
I’ve taken a look at Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes (2009) on 4K Ultra HD from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment. It’s a nice (if modest) image upgrade on the format that fans of the film especially should appreciate. HDR gives the proceedings a nice boost.
Also, Dennis has taken a look at David Lynch’s The Elephant Man, which is now available on Blu-ray from The Criterion Collection. Sounds like it’s a very worthy upgrade, mastered from the new StudioCanal 4K transfer. And for those of you wondering, the “missing” fade from the StudioCanal 4K is also missing here. But do keep in mind that Lynch approved the remaster, so it’s possible he made the change himself (meaning it might not be an error).
Now then, we’ve got more reviews coming over the next few days. Two are already to go for tomorrow and more should follow. So stay tuned for that. [Read on here...]

Breaking 4K news: Tremors, Army of Darkness, Collateral, Final Countdown, Beastmaster, Ladykillers, Ip Man & more!
All right Bits readers, we’ve got a pretty significant news update for you today...
We’ve been tracking many of these titles, but a few of the 4K catalog titles we’re going to talk about today are breaking news, thanks to our old friends over at Media Play News.
They’ve just issued the September 2020 Digital edition of their magazine, which features an extensive look at the recent surge of 4K Ultra HD catalog releases. The publication’s editor, Stephanie Prange (who, full disclosure, I’ve known for many years), wrote a great longform piece for the issue called 4K Ultra HD: Into the Vaults about the process of preparing classic catalog films for release on the format.
Not only is it informative (and I should note that I was among the people interviewed therein), it includes some great news about forthcoming titles. [Read on here...]

Beverly Hills Cop & Coming to America in 4K, plus Star Trek: Picard on Blu-ray & RIP Ron Cobb
All right, we’ve got some pretty significant announcement news to cover here at The Bits today...
But first, I’ve posted my thoughts on Warner Bros. Home Entertainment’s new 4K Ultra HD remaster of Stanley Kubrick’s Full Metal Jacket. The disc streets today and it’s pretty solid (though it’s not quite up to the level of some of the other recent Kubrick 4K remasters simply because of the nature of the film itself). You can find that here.
And more Blu-ray and 4K reviews are forthcoming.
Now then... the big news this morning is that Paramount has officially announced the 4K Ultra HD release of Beverly Hills Cop on 12/1. A remastered Blu-ray came out earlier this year, and of course the film is already available digitally in 4K.
But that’s not all: The studio is also releasing Coming to America on 4K Ultra HD in both regular and Steelbook packaging, along with a remastered Blu-ray, that same day. This is tied to their upcoming sequel film, Coming 2 America, which is still tentatively due to arrive in theaters in December. [Read on here...]

It’s a Wonderful Life 4K reviewed, plus Rambo: Last Blood official, new 4K dates & new KL Studio Classics BDs
All right, we begin today with some new disc reviews...
I’ve just turned in my thoughts on Paramount’s stunning new 4K restoration of Frank Capra’s It’s a Wonderful Life, one of those films I’d take to a desert island if I had to be stranded there with only a few. The film has never looked better and the disc even offers some tremendous newly-created extras, though the included Blu-ray version is a puzzler. Still, fans should agree that the restoration is worth every penny and it’s just $19 on Amazon right now. Don’t hesitate.
I’m working to finish my review of Warner’s The Wizard of Oz next and I’m also checking out the first couple of discs of Network’s new Monty Python’s Flying Circus Blu-ray set. So watch for those reviews soon.
Meanwhile, Tim has posted his thoughts on Scream Factory’s new Collector’s Edition Blu-ray of Chuck Russell’s 1988 remake of The Blob. Fans will definitely want to give it a look.
And Dennis has weighed in on Ari Aster’s Midsommar on Blu-ray from A23 and Lionsgate, so do give that a look as well. [Read on here...]

Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood official, plus remastered Beverly Hills Cop films coming to BD (and 4K Digital)
Morning, folks!
We’re busy working on reviews here at The Bits this week, including The Wizard of Oz and It’s a Wonderful Life in 4K, as well as Monty Python’s Flying Circus and Batman Beyond on Blu-ray (and more).
But there’s breaking news we wanted to jump in a post right away...
First, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced the Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD release of Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood on 12/10, with the Digital release expected on 11/25.
The film was finished as a native 4K Digital Intermediate, so it should look terrific. Audio will be 7.1 DTS-HD MA on 4K (with HDR10 high dynamic range) and 5.1 DTS-HD MA on Blu-ray. [Read on here...]
