Wolf of Wall Street 4K, new Disney Movie Club titles, Sony 4K delays, Bill guests on Let’s Get Physical Media & MUCH more!
Welcome to a new week, folks! Let’s start things off today with some new disc reviews...
First up, Tim has posted his thoughts on Sidney Salkow’s The Last Man on Earth (1964) starring Vincent Price, which is newly-released on Blu-ray by our friends at Kino Lorber Studio Classics. Tim has also taken a look at Arrow Video’s excellent new Cold War Creatures: Four Films from Sam Katzman Blu-ray box set, which streets tomorrow and includes Creature with the Atom Brain, The Werewolf, Zombies of Mora Tau, and The Giant Claw.
Meanwhile, Stephen has offered up his thoughts on Sidney Lumet’s Prince of the City (1981), new on Blu-ray from the Warner Archive Collection, as well as Wolfgang Peterson’s The NeverEnding Story on German-import 4K Ultra HE from Constantin Film. Note that both the 4K and Blu-ray discs in that package are region free.
And finally, Dennis has turned in his thoughts on Douglas Hickcox’s Theater of Blood (1973), also starring Vincent Price, also newly-available on Blu-ray from Kino Lorber Studio Classics.
All of those titles are worth a look and we’ve got more Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD reviews coming in the days ahead (including my thoughts on The Thing and Black Widow in 4K). So be sure to watch for those. [Read on here...]

Warner’s Middle-Earth 4K set is official, plus more catalog Ultra HD, a few words on StudioCanal’s T2: 30th & MUCH more
We have a bit more ground to cover today, news-wise (and just as expected), but first we have a few more disc reviews for you…
Stephen has taken a look at Robert Altman’s Nashville, as newly released on Blu-ray by Paramount as part of their Paramount Presents line. From Stephen’s review, it sounds like the title is pretty good.
And Tim has reviewed the animated Batman: The Long Halloween – Part One and Part Two on Blu-ray Disc. Part One came out in June from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment and DC, while Part Two just came out last month. Both are apparently well worth a look.
As always, more reviews are on the way, so be sure to keep your eyes peeled for them. [Read on here...]

All right, sorry for the lack of a post yesterday, but we’ve been swamped working on new disc reviews for you guys. And in fact, over the last few days, we’ve posted several of them, including...
My take on Paramount’s new Star Trek: The Original 4-Movie Collection which includes the theatrical edition of Star Trek: The Motion Picture, both versions of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, and Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home on both 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray Disc.
My in-depth look at David Lynch’s Dune: Limited Edition in 4K Ultra HD from Arrow Video, featuring a gorgeous remastered image and both new and legacy extras.
And also my look at Random Space Media’s recent Battlestar Galactica: The Definitive Collection 36-disc Blu-ray box set, which contains the original 1979 feature film, the original TV series, Galactica 1980, the more recent reboot TV series (plus its tie-in films), and—for the first time in Region A—Caprica: The Complete Series.
But that’s not all: Stephen has posted a review of Paul Morrissey’s Blood for Dracula in 4K Ultra HD from Severin Films.
And Tim has reviewed Smokey and the Bandit on 4K Ultra HD from Universal.
Tim’s also turned in his thoughts on Via Vision’s Hammer Horror: Four Gothic Horror Films box set, which includes Countess Dracula, Hands of the Ripper, Twins of Evil, and Vampire Circus on Blu-ray. [Read on here...]

Criterion’s Uncut Gems in 4K, plus The Green Knight, Scream’s Krampus 4K, new Shout!/Kino Lorber Studio Classics catalog titles & more
We’ve got some reviews to catch up on here at The Bits this afternoon...
Over the past couple of days, we’ve posted a number of new Blu-ray reviews, including Stephen’s thoughts on Kensuke Sonomura’s Hydra (2019) from Well Go USA, Savage Steve Holland’s One Crazy Summer (1986) from the Warner Archive Collection, and Jacques Deray’s The Outsider (1983) and Harold Becker’s The Black Marble (1980) from Kino Lorber Studio Classics.
And Tim has turned in his thoughts on Tom McLoughlin’s One Dark Night (1983) from the MVD Rewind Collection, the Friday the 13th: 8-Movie Collection from Paramount Pictures Home Entertainment, and Umbrella Entertainment’s Drive-In Delirium: The Final Conflict, which feature a whopping 181 classic film trailers. All of these titles are well worth a look, so do give the reviews a try.
In announcement news today, Criterion has revealed that they’re adding a physical 4K Ultra HD release of Uncut Gems to their November release slate. The Blu-ray and DVD release are moving to 11/23, which is the date the 4K will arrive as well. And all three are getting new cover artwork, which you can now here see on the left and also below. Middle-Earth UCE revealed (but not yet announced), plus more Neon Genesis Evangelion SKUs, a remastered Vanilla Sky & more
All right, we’ve got a bit of breaking news to cover today, so let’s get right to it...
Warner Bros. Home Entertainment is close to announcing their long-awaited Middle-Earth 31-Disc Ultimate Collector’s Edition box set, which will include the Theatrical and Extended versions of all six Hobbit and Lord of the Rings films on both 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray (including the remastered Lord of the Rings films on Blu-ray) along with a Blu-ray bonus disc of new content that (per our sources) is expected to include the 26-minute presentation reel shown at Cannes in 2001, and the Alamo Drafthouse cast reunion in 3 parts. In total, we expect this to be about 90 minutes of new content in all. (Note that the existing audio commentaries will also carry over on the actual film discs.) You’ll also get a 64-page book of costume sketches, photography, and production notes, plus 7 “travel poster” artwork cards.
Please be advised that The Appendices will not be included in this new set (that was confirmed when WB first revealed the set last year) so don’t start selling your existing Blu-ray and 4K sets in anticipation of buying the new one assuming that everything will be included in it.
Warner’s official announcement should come at any time, but we’ve got a sneak peek at what the set looks like in the meantime from a new listing on the Wow HD UK webstore, which currently shows a street date of October 26 (click here for that, and you can see the packaging below)... John Carpenter’s The Thing hits 4K on 9/7, plus F9, Miyazaki’s Future Boy Conan, Star Trek audio details & more
We’ve got more new disc reviews for you today and some more new 4K Ultra HD release news as well!
Let’s start with those reviews...
Stephen has turned in his thoughts on All the Anime’s UK import 4K Ultra HD release of Makoto Shinkai’s Your Name. The package is exclusive to All the Anime’s online store and also to Zavvi. Sounds like it’s worth a look if you’re a fan, as the HDR makes a notable difference.
Now then, a quick update on our Star Trek: The Original 4-Film Collection 4K and remastered Blu-ray news from yesterday: We’ve checked in with Paramount and have confirmed that all of the remastered films in BD & 4K will feature 7.1 Dolby TrueHD audio mixes. So plan accordingly.
Meanwhile, the 4K Ultra HD set and the remastered Blu-ray singles are all now available for pre-order on Amazon.com and you can see the cover artwork (and find the pre-order links) below. [Read on here...]

IT’S OFFICIAL: The STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE – DIRECTOR’S EDITION is getting restored in 4K!!
Heads-up, folks!
No sooner did I post here on The Bits about that Star Trek: The Original 4-Movie Collection cover artwork leak, I got an email back from Paramount with a link to the official Star Trek website with this news:
“Paramount and Paramount+ are excited to announce that a full restoration of the Director’s Edition of Star Trek: The Motion Picture has been greenlit.”
From the website... [Read on here...]

Online retailer leaks Paramount’s Star Trek 4K UHD box art
Here’s a quick update with a bit of breaking news. Very early this morning, I noticed on the online retail website Bull Moose that their listing for Paramount’s Star Trek: The Original 4-Movie Collection 4K Ultra HD box set—which is now widely (yet still unofficially) known to be set for release on 9/7—had been updated to include the cover artwork you see at left (and also larger below).
After sharing this on my own personal Twitter and Facebook pages (and also on our Bits Twitter and Facebook pages), I contacted Paramount directly to ask about it. It’s now been several hours and the studio has not (as yet) responded to my inquiry. Within an hour of contacting them, however, the entire title listing (artwork and all) was pulled down by Bull Moose. But of course that artwork has already been shared far and wide online. (The Tribbles are most certainly out of the bag, so to speak.)
So here’s the deal: This now represents at least the third online retailer to leak the basic details of this release. As such, official or not, it does indeed appear that Paramount is releasing a Star Trek: The Original 4-Movie Collection box set in 4K Ultra HD on 9/7. In case you missed it when we first posted this in yesterday’s news column here at The Bits—which included a big update of the 4K UHD catalog titles we expect for the remainder of 2021—here are the details as we understand them based upon the best available information from our industry sources... Scream bows the Halloween films in 4K, plus our BIG Ultra HD catalog update for the rest of 2021 & remembering Richard Donner
All right, it’s been a busy last several days here at The Bits. For one thing, just personally, I had my mother visiting from North Dakota all last week for the first time in over two years given the pandemic. And that was great, but of course it set me back on 4K review work (which I intend to catch up on this week).
I’ve also just spent most of today on the phone with industry sources, gathering information for our big preview of 4K Ultra HD catalog releases that are coming in the second half of 2021. And that’s the crux of today’s post here at The Bits, but more on that in a minute.
First, we have a couple more new disc reviews to share with you...
Dennis has posted his thoughts on Andrew V. McLaglen’s 1965 Civil War drama Shenandoah, which stars Jimmy Stewart. The film arrives on Blu-ray from Kino Lorber Studio Classics on 7/27.
And Stephen has offered a look at John Sturges’ acclaimed 1959 western Last Train from Gun Hill, a VistaVision classic newly released on Blu-ray as part of the Paramount Presents line-up. [Read on here...]

Our review of Indiana Jones in 4K Ultra HD & more, plus Labyrinth: 35th, Flight to Mars, and a brief Star Trek 4K update
All right... we have just a quick update here at The Bits for you today, because I have family visiting this weekend for the first time since before the pandemic.
The big thing we have for you this afternoon is of course this: I’ve posted our in-depth review of the Indiana Jones: 4-Movie Collection in 4K Ultra HD from Paramount Home Entertainment and Lucasfilm. The remastered 4K image on the first three films is spectacular, while the fourth film at least benefits some from HDR and some 4K-scanned footage from the camera negative here and there (shots without VFX). Meanwhile, the new Ben Burtt Dolby Atmos mixes are all demo-worthy across the board.
There are no new extras in the set and the packaging is terrible, but the picture and sound upgrade is so significant that most fans will be willing to overlook it. The set is definitely not to be missed, and you’ll find all the in-depth details right here in our review. [Read on here...]
