Burnt Offerings for September 16, 2014
We’re going to be trying something a little bit different here at Burnt Offerings starting this week. Don’t worry, we’ll still take a close look at this week’s roundup of MOD releases (and considering the large number of westerns this week, “roundup” is the right word). But afterwards, we’re going to take a quick look at what’s available instantly, at your fingertips, right now on the intertubes in a mini-column-within-a-column I’m calling Wide Awake In Streamland. We’ll get to that in a minute but first, the discs (available for purchase via the banners below, thank you very much indeed). [Read on here…]
Grand Budapest Hotel, Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, and Toxic Avenger on BD, plus new columns & more!
We’ve got a great new View from the Cheap Seats column today from our own Bud Elder, in which he remembers the late Mickey Rooney. Bud also highlights some great recent releases on Blu-ray and DVD. Don’t miss it.
Also today, the good Dr. Jahnke has turned in a new An Honor to Be Nominated installment of his Jahnke’s Electric Theatre column in which he looks back at Stanley Kubrick’s Barry Lyndon. Be sure to read his thoughts and then check out our review of the film on Blu-ray too. [Read on here...]

Cosmos, Lone Survivor, Fox Searchlight 20th Anniv. BDs, Veronica Mars movie pre-orders & more!
First up today, Dr. Jahnke has turned in a new An Honor to Be Nominated installment of his regular Jahnke’s Electric Theater column here at The Bits, taking a look back at the Coen Brothers’ A Serious Man. It’s a good read about a film that we here at The Bits happen to think is one of the Coens’ best. Anyway, Jahnke’s take is definitely worth your time, so do check it out. Enjoy!
We’ve also got more new announcement news today, but first... for those of you interested in the new Cosmos TV series on Fox, the title just went pup for pre-order on Amazon.com. As we first reported last week here in The Bits, 20th Century Fox is currently working on the release, which we expect to be announced for Blu-ray and DVD in the weeks ahead. You’ll find Fox’s preliminary cover art below. [Read on here...]

Once, Notes on a Scandal, Big Bad Wolves, Seven Warriors & lots of catalog & indie release news
All right, we’ve got a bunch of interesting studio and indie release announcements today, including some new titles, catalog titles, TV stuff and more.
First though, our own Dr. Adam Jahnke has turned in a new Jahnke’s Electric Theatre column today, featuring the latest installment of An Honor to Be Nominated. This time, Adam looks back at Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather, Part III. Enjoy!
Now then... announcement news... 20th Century Fox is releasing the indie music hit Once on Blu-ray on 4/1 (SRP $19.99) but only as an Amazon.com exclusive. Following on BD on 4/29, also as an Amazon exclusive, is Notes on a Scandal (SRP $19.99), which stars Cate Blanchette, Judi Dench and Bill Nighy. You can see the cover artwork for both titles below. Fox will also widely release an Ice Age 4-movie BD set on 4/1 (SRP $49.99), as well as The King of Comedy: 30th Anniversary Edition on 3/25. [Read on here...]

Kill Your Darlings, plus more classic Godzilla films coming to Blu-ray!
All right, I apologize in advance for the fact that today’s post is so short, but I’m suffering through a bout of vertigo caused by having slept in a lousy position for too many hours last night and thereby strained my neck. Ugh. Seriously, right? Ain’t nobody got time for that!
Anyway, our very own Dr. Adam Jahnke has turned in a new installment of his Electric Theater column today featuring his weekly An Honor to Be Nominated look back at deserving films that were Oscar-nominated but didn’t win. Today’s subject: Herbert Ross’ The Turning Point (1977). Enjoy! [Read on here…]

An Honor To Be Nominated: The Turning Point
If it can be difficult to remember who won the Academy Award for Best Picture, it’s downright mindbending trying to remember everything else it was up against. In An Honor To Be Nominated, I’ll be taking a look back at some of the movies the Oscar didn’t go to and trying to determine if they were robbed, if the Academy got it right, or if they should ever have been nominated in the first place. An Honor To Be Nominated: The Color Purple
Back in 2011, I started a gig as DVD columnist for a website called The Morton Report. It was (and is) a fine site but after awhile, the challenge of writing about the same subject for two different outlets began to take its toll. I left the site and devoted my DVD-related ramblings back to The Bits.
While I was there, I created a column called An Honor To Be Nominated. The mission statement for the column was fairly simple: [Read on here...]
Burnt Offerings For September 10: Universal Unleashes The Wild Life
Remember the Universal Vault Series, Universal’s intermittent foray into the world of MOD? Well, apparently Universal just remembered about it, too. On August 30, they released several new entries, quietly and with zero fanfare, presumably out of respect for those of us who were reverently observing the Feast of Alexander of Constantinople that day.
Of the various MOD programs, Universal and 20th Century Fox seem to be having the most trouble (I’ll be talking about Fox next week). Sony and MGM went through similar growing pains before partnering with Warner Archive for promotion and distribution. I’m not saying that all MOD needs to go through Warner Bros. But all MOD programs should be able to learn from Warner’s model. At least people know what’s available and when from them.
Anyway, here’s a look at what’s new from the Universal Vault Series. And if you’re interested in a complete list of available Universal Vault titles, I’ve posted one on the Jahnke’s Electric Theater Facebook page. All Universal Vault titles are available for purchase on Amazon here at this link. [Read on here...]
