Doogan’s Queue for May 6, 2014

It’s May! Hooray! That means the start-up of a bountiful run of movies on home media. This month is seeing a lot of catalog re-releases and that’s what we’ll be looking at this week. Only a few new release titles with a whole bunch of remastered goodness filling up the back-end. And away we go!

Let’s look at the new stuff worth mentioning this week first: [Read on here…]

If you’ve been following my Queues this month, you know I’m not a big fan of how light this month’s been in terms of awesome titles. A few big’uns snuck through, but not enough. Well, this week’s no better, but at least it’s closing out. Welcome to the last entry of the month of April, 2014. Yee-haw. So without further noise, let’s get this ball down the hill. Morning, folks. Or good afternoon, good evening or good night, as the case might be.

El Doogan has turned in a new Gripe Soda with his weekly Doogan’s Queue column running down the highlights of this week’s Blu-ray and DVD release schedule. Do check it out.

Also today, Warner Home Video has announced another Blu-ray version of Woodstock: 3 Days of Peace and Music, specifically a new 40th Anniversary Limited Edition Revisited box set on 7/29 (SRP $39.96) that includes everything from the previous (but apparently not truly) Ultimate Collector’s Edition and adds new and unseen concert footage from Jefferson Airplane, Joan Baez, Santana, The Who, and more, as well as new swag (including a reproduction of the original Woodstock Festival tickets and vintage articles from Life Magazine and The New York Times). I’m not kidding kids, this month is really coming down as one of the more disappointing months for releases in a while. It was bound to happen – April tends to be a stinker. And I’m not super sure why. It’s not like nothing of interest comes out, but it’s just not been a huge month in my mind. There are a few titles of interest, so let’s look at those. [Read on here…]

This holy week is rather weak in terms of worthy-of-mentioning new releases. But, my lack of excitement for these titles isn’t going to stop me from letting you all know what’s coming out. Just don’t kill the messenger.

Black Nativity – Langston Hughes’ gospel-themed stage play gets a modern facelift in this musical film by Kasi Lemmons. Not too much praise for this, but it can’t be too bad considering the talent behind it: Forest Whitaker, Angela Bassett, Tyrese Gibson, Jennifer Hudson, Mary J. Blige, Vondie Curtis-Hall  and Nas all lend a face and a voice.  [Read on here…]

All right, I’ve finally got my review of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug on Blu-ray for you to check out. The movie is fun – better than the first go-round for those keeping score – and the Blu-ray itself delivers all the quality and extras you’d expect from the Theatrical Cut BD release. The disc streets today, so check out the review… then pick up your copy and enjoy! [Read on here…]

Doogan’s Queue for the week of April 8, 2014

Welcome once again to Doogan’s Queue, your one stop location for a rundown of Ten Items Or Fewer I personally find interesting streeting today.

Everything on this, I one hundred percent guarantee I will watch or buy – though I can’t guarantee I will like everything I mention.

Let’s take a look at what’s hitting store shelves this week, shall we? [Read on here…]

A very merry “Fool’s Day” to you all! Hope you’re enjoying the usual hilarity. We’ve only got real news for you here this afternoon, so let’s get right to it.

First though, our own Todd Doogan has turned in a newly-revised installment of his weekly Doogan’s Queue column running down his picks for the best of the new Blu-ray and DVD titles available in stores TODAY. It’s a good read, so do check it out.

Also today, the good Dr. Jahnke has his latest installment of Burnt Offerings: MOD DVD for you covering the latest in small-batch, “hand-crafted,” aged-in-oak Manufactured on Demand titles from the likes of the Warner Archive, 20th Century Fox Cinema Archives and the Sony Pictures Choice Collection. Do partake liberally. [Read on here...]
