Scream for a Week – November 23, 2016

Welcome to our newest column additionScream for a Week!

We here at The Digital Bits are big fans of Shout!’s Scream Factory division and, not unlike Todd Doogan’s Criterion Spines Project, we wanted to cover Scream Factory’s releases by catching up on a bunch that we’ve missed while acknowledging the previous ones. We’ll also be covering new ones here as well. This column will go up on a bi-weekly basis, so be sure to check back in another two weeks for another pile of Scream Factory goodness.

First up is Beneath, a Larry Fessenden giant fish movie that I’m actually a little less hard on than I was when I originally wrote the review. Today, I’d probably give it more of a B or a B- as it’s grown on me since then. New to Blu-ray this week are both Rabid and Dead Ringers, a pair of David Cronenberg movies that are stacked with some great extras worth digging into. Also new, at least as far as catching up with older Scream Factory titles is concerned, is The Monkey’s Paw, a Chiller movie that actually has some merit. And last but not least, Paul Schrader’s terrific remake of Cat People. [Read on here…]

We’ve got two more Blu-ray reviews for you today: Our own Tim Salmons continues his Scream Factory marathon with a look at their recent Cat People: Collector’s Edition and also Beneath. Enjoy!

In release news today, the best announcement is that HBO has officially set True Detective: Season One for Blu-ray and DVD release on 6/10 (SRP $79.98 and $59.99). We’ll post additional details as they become available. Great damn show – we highly recommend it if you haven’t seen it yet. And with only 8 episodes, it’s an easy binge watch.  [Read on here…]

Tim has checked in this afternoon with a brand new Blu-ray review: Jean-Pierre Melville’s Two Men in Manhattan, now available from the Cohen Film Collection. More reviews are on the way, so be sure to check back over the next few days.

In announcement news today, MGM has announced that it’s celebrating its 90th anniversary with new 4K restorations of some of its best films, including Rocky, Rain Man, Fargo, RoboCop and The Good, The Bad and The Ugly and is releasing them on Blu-ray. RoboCop is already available and most of the others are already available for pre-order on Amazon.com. Meanwhile, they’re releasing other titles on Blu-ray like In the Heat of the Night, A Chrous Line, The Birdcage and others. [Read on here…]
