We have a bunch of new title announcements to start the week off right today...

First up, Paramount has just officially set Damien Chazelle’s Babylon for release on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD on 3/21, with the Digital release expected tomorrow on 1/31. The Blu-ray and 4K disc will include a trio of behind-the-scenes featurettes (A Panoramic Canvas Called Babylon, The Costumes of Babylon, and Scoring Babylon) along with deleted and extended scenes. Note that a Steelbook 4K SKU will also be widely available the same day. You can see the Amaray art at left and both versions below.

Paramount has now made Adrian Lyne’s Flashdance (1983) official for release in 4K Ultra HD on 4/11 as a new 40th Anniversary Edition. You can see that below as well.

They’ve also set Jon Chu’s G.I. Joe: Retaliation (2013) for 4K Ultra HD re-release as well as a 4K Steelbook 10th Anniversary Edition on 3/28 with Dolby Vision HDR.

And on the TV front, Paramount and Comedy Central have announced South Park: The Complete Twenty-Fifth Season for Blu-ray and DVD release on 4/4. [Read on here...]

We’re closing out the week with some new Blu-ray and 4K title announcements and a few updates on 4K titles we’ve mentioned here at The Bits previously.

In terms of official announcements, Disney and Searchlight Pictures have set Sam Mendes’ Empire of Light for release on Blu-ray and DVD on 2/21, with the 4K Digital release expected on 2/7. Extras will include the Creating the Empire of Light featurette. You can see the cover artwork at left.

Lionsgate has set Brett Donowho’s western The Old Way, starring Nicholas Cage, for Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital release on 2/21.

And Film Movement will release Mario Martone’s The King of Laughter on DVD and Digital on 2/14.

Also, Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment has set their new animated Duck Dodgers: The Complete Series for release on Blu-ray on 3/28. [Read on here...]

Our friends at the Criterion Collection have just unveiled their December Blu-ray slate this afternoon, which is set to include four more interesting titles...

It starts with the Michael Haneke: Trilogy (Spine #1161 – Blu-ray only – includes The Seventh Continent, Benny’s Video, and 71 Fragments of a Chronology of Chance) on 12/6. And following on 12/12 are Todd Haynes’ The Velvet Underground (Spine 1164 – Blu-ray and DVD), Three Films by Mai Zetterling (Spine #1162 – Blu-ray only – includes Loving Couples, Night Games, and The Girls), and finally Michael Schultz’s Cooley High (Spine #1165 – Blu-ray only).

It’s worth noting that The Velvet Underground documentary will include a new Dolby Atmos soundtrack. Click here for more details on all of these titles.

In 4K Ultra HD news today, retail sources are indicating that Universal will release David Gordon Green’s Halloween Ends on 12/27, though do keep in mind that this date is tentative and subject to change, as the film doesn’t actually hit theaters until 10/14. [Read on here...]

Hope you’re all having a great week so far. I was buried in catch-up work yesterday after having a series of family visits here—our first in two years due to the pandemic—so suffice it to say that there was no news post yesterday.

However, I’ve been on the phone a lot in the last couple of days talking with industry sources, and we’ve got some great new Blu-ray and especially 4K catalog updates for you this afternoon.

FYI, there will be more new disc reviews coming later this week as well, so be sure to check back for those. But let’s get right into the 4K news...

First up, I’ve confirmed with multiple industry sources now that Warner Bros. will be releasing Francis Ford Coppola’s The Outsiders (1983) on physical 4K Ultra HD in early November. Coppola and his American Zoetrope have recently been remastering several of the director’s films in 4K (Lionsgate is releasing a remastered Dementia 13 on Blu-ray and 4K Digital on 9/21 as part of their Vestron Video Collector’s Series, and Paramount is going to be releasing the complete Godfather Trilogy in 4K Ultra HD next year in honor of the original film’s 50th anniversary), so perhaps it shouldn’t come as a surprise. Okay, we’ve got just a couple things for you this afternoon...

First, Dennis has offered his thoughts on Michael Curtiz’s 1932 pre-Code horror film Doctor X, staring Fay Wray. It’s now available on Blu-ray from the Warner Archive Collection and you can see what Dennis has to say about the title here. Sounds like the actual disc quality is excellent.

In release news today, Amazon.de is now showing Zack Snyder’s Justice League coming to 4K in Germany on 5/27 (pre-order it here). There’s also a 4K Steelbook following in Germany on 7/8. Meanwhile, the dates for this title in France are currently listed as 6/9 for both the regular 4K release and the Steelbook 4K version. US retailers have yet to list the title, but our most recent information is that the studio will drop it on or about 5/25. We’ll certainly post updates as we have more information. [Read on here...]

All right, we’ve got an announcement news update for you here at The Bits this afternoon...

First up today, Kino Lorber Studio Classics has officially set their long-awaited Spaceballs (1987) 4K Ultra HD for release on 4/12. The 4K disc will include Dolby Vision HDR and audio commentary by Mel Brooks. Audio will be includes in 5.1 and 2.0 (format TBA) with optional English subs. You’ll also get the film on Blu-ray, which will include lots of additional legacy extras. You can see the 4K art at left. We’ve updated our 4K Ultra HD Release List here at The Bits accordingly.

The company also has a nice March slate of catalog Blu-ray titles, which is expected to include Sidney Lanfield’s My Favorite Blonde (1942), David Butler’s Caught in the Draft (1941), and Elliott Nugent’s Nothing But the Truth (1941) on 3/2 (all Bob Hope films), followed by Don Jones’ The Forest (1982, for Code Red), Sam Peckinpah’s Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia (1974), Robert Aldrich’s The Choirboys (1977), and Richard Fleischer’s The Don is Dead (1973) on 3/9, Jim O’Connoly’s Tower of Evil (1972, for Scorpion Releasing), Andy Anderson’s Positive I.D. Universal has announced a direct-to-video sequel to American Pie for release on DVD and Digital on 10/6: American Pie Presents: Girls’ Rules. Apparently, it’s on its way to Netflix as well.

Also, MVD Entertainment Group has set Seniors, A Documentary for DVD and VOD on 9/29.

Powerhouse Films and Indicator in the UK have their Samuel Fuller at Columbia: 1937-1961 Limited Edition box set on sale right now for just £34.50 in honor of Fuller’s birthday. It includes the films It Happened in Hollywood (1937), Adventure in Sahara (1938), Power of the Press (1943), Shockproof (1949), Scandal Sheet (1952), The Crimson Kimono (1959), and Underworlds USA (1961). We’ve got some interesting announcement news for you today...

First up, Lionsgate has just announced the 10/8 Blu-ray and DVD release of Ari Aster’s horror film Midsommar, with the Digital version coming on 9/24 from A24. Extras will include the Let the Festivities Begin: Manifesting Midsommar featurette and the “Bear in a Cage” promo.

Speaking of horror, Paramount has set Netflix’s The Haunting of Hill House for release on Blu-ray and DVD on 10/15, including all 10 episodes plus extended director’s cut versions of 3 episodes (Steven Sees a Ghost, The Bent-Neck Lady, and Silence Lay Steadily) and audio commentary by director Mike Flanagan on 4 episodes (the three extended episodes plus Two Storms). We start this week with a great new Blu-ray review, this one of Scream Factory’s Universal Horror Collection, Volume 1 box set, which includes The Black Cat (1934), The Raven (1935), The Invisible Ray (1936), and Black Friday (1940). Do give it a look.
