We’re starting today with four new disc reviews, including looks at Lionsgate and Summit’s Knowing and Sony’s Across the Universe in 4K Ultra HD by me (with our late great friend and Bits family member Barrie Maxwell), as well as Tim’s take on MVD’s Black Eagle: Special Edition and AGFA and Something Weird’s The Violent Years on Blu-ray. Also today, we have an update on Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey. Warner Bros. has now officially announced (see this link) that the film is returning to theaters for a limited run in 70mm starting on 5/18 in honor of its 50th anniversary. The 4K Ultra HD pre-order page was recently pulled down from Amazon and now we know why: The street date had been listed as 5/8, but the title is now slated to arrive this fall, after the theatrical run. All right, folks… we’ve got some great breaking news on the 4K catalog front for you today.

THIS JUST IN: Paramount is kicking ass with their 4K catalog releases. For whatever reason, they has opened up the floodgates with great titles on the format in 2018. And thank goodness for it!

As you already know, we’ve been reporting for a couple months now (and have confirmed) that all five Mission: Impossible films are coming to 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray from Paramount this summer to support either the theatrical or home video release of Mission: Impossible – Fallout. That includes Mission: Impossible, Mission: Impossible 2, Mission: Impossible III, Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, and Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation. [Read on here...]

All right, we’ve got some interesting release news to report today. First though…

We’ve posted several new Blu-ray reviews in the last couple of days, including my take on Warner Archive’s Batman & Mr. Freeze: SubZero and the Kino Lorber Studio Classics title Joan of Arc, as well as Tim’s thoughts on Warner Archive’s Joe Versus the Volcano, Arrow Video’s There’s Always Vanilla, Shout!/Scream Factory’s Colossus: The Forbin Project and 78/52: Hitchcock’s Shower Scene, and Universal’s Happy Death Day. Now then, Shout! Factory has announced that they’re going to be bringing Disney’s Gravity Falls: The Complete Series to Blu-ray and DVD on 7/24 (SRP $99.99 and $59.97 respectively, though if you purchase them from Shout! directly you get $20 off the BD and $10 off the DVD). [Read on here...]

All right, we’re starting the new week this afternoon with a trio of fresh Blu-ray reviews…

First up, Tim has checked out Scalpel (1977) on BD from Arrow Video, as well as Val Guest’s When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth (1970) from the Warner Archive Collection.

I’ve also just posted my thoughts on the Warner Archive’s long-awaited Batman & Mr. Freeze: SubZero on Blu-ray, a great upgrade of the original direct-to-DVD release and a nice aperitif for their upcoming release of the complete Batman: The Animated Series on Blu-ray later in 2018. We’re starting today with three new Blu-ray reviews from Tim, including Synapse Films’ Unearthed & Untold: The Path to Pet Sematary – Special Edition documentary and their Suspiria: Two-Disc Special Edition, as well as Umbrella Entertainment’s Aussie import Suspiria: 40th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray. All three discs, and the reviews, are worth a look.

All right, we’ve got a couple of news items to cover for you today...

First up, a quick reminder: Warner’s The Matrix is now available for pre-order in 4K Ultra HD on Amazon with a street date of 5/22. Click here to visit the pre-order page.

Speaking of 4K, we have a number of retail sources now that are suggesting that the street date for Marvel and Disney’s Black Panther on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K will be 5/15. This, of course, is subject to official confirmation by the studio. Watch for an announcement in the weeks ahead. [Read on here...]

All right, first up today we have two more Blu-ray reviews from Tim for you, including his thoughts on Warner Archive’s Doc Hollywood and also Dragonwyck from Twilight Time. Both are worth a look. And a little later today I’ll be back with my review of Sony’s The Dark Crystal on 4K Ultra HD (I’ll add the link here when it’s up).

Now then, the BIG news this afternoon (weren’t we just talking about this yesterday?) is that Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has now officially announced the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of the Wachowskis’ 1999 sci-fi/cyberpunk classic The Matrix on 5/22 (SRP $41.99). The 4K release has been produced from a new 4K scan of the original camera negative, a remaster supervised by the film’s director of photography, Bill Pope. The resulting image has been given HDR color grades in both HDR10 and Dolby Vision, both of which will be featured on this 4K UHD release. Furthermore, the 4K release will feature Dolby Atmos object-based audio. The actual 4K disc will also include a written introduction by the Wachowskis, along with all four previously-available audio commentaries (including the Philosopher, Critics, Cast & Crew, and Composer tracks). Now then, we’ve got some interesting news today for you as well...

First up, it appears that Warner’s The Matrix and Fox’s Die Hard, which we’ve mentioned here at The Bits recently are both coming to 4K Ultra HD (see here and here), will street in 4K sometime in May. Neither title is as yet officially announced, but multiple industry sources now are pointing to likely May street dates. And we now have European retail temp cover artwork for The Matrix too, which you can see at left. [Read on here...]
