Doogan’s Queue for September 16, 2014

Thanks to everyone who has checked in on me about my bum foot – it’s doing much better. I can actually walk now (with a sexy limp, thank you very much) and I’ve only needed to dip into my pain meds a little (I’m not a fan of pain pills). That’s put me in front of the TV a lot these last few weeks and what did I choose to watch, you may ask? I watched every friggin’ minute of Trailer Park Boys. Holy smoley that is a fun show. It gets derivative, but there’s a certain charm to the formula and they seem to know it because they kinda just put it right out there. Considering there are 8 seasons and 3 movies (and a special) on Netflix, I’d say you could do worse with your life if you’re bedridden. I mean, sure, build a boat if you have full use of your body – but if you’re feeling sorry for yourself and don’t feel like making a downstairs hike to your disc library – it’s a good call. As for the ‘fore-mentioned discs – there are a few shining stars out this week and a whole slew of upgrade rereleases deserving your attention. Let’s spotlight, shall we?  [Read on here…]

Welcome to a new week. We’re kicking things off today with a great new Blu-ray review – Tim’s taken a look at Warner’s new Godzilla in 1080p, directed by Gareth Edwards (previously known for his clever Monsters). Sounds like the disc’s picture and sound quality deliver nicely, if not the extras. Do check it out.  [Read on here…]

Today’s post is a quick one, as I have family visiting this weekend. However, we do have a couple things for you today…

First, Tim has posted a review of Twilight Time’s new Blu-ray of Two Rode Together, a classic John Ford and Jimmy Stewart western from 1961. Do give it a look.  [Read on here…]

Well… the response to my Star Trek and Blu-ray 4K columns of the past couple days has been very positive and positively overwhelming! I’ve gotten tons of e-mails and messages about both topics and I’m going to do my best to get back to everyone but it might take a few days.

Meanwhile today, the esteemed Dr. Jahnke has reviewed a classic and iconic David Lynch film on Blu-ray from Criterion… the long-awaited Eraserhead. Some of you longtime readers might recall that, ten or fifteen years ago, there was talk of the film coming to Criterion on DVD, but it failed to materialize. It’s now part of the Collection at least and it sounds as if they’ve really hit it out of the park. Don’t miss it.  [Read on here…]

First up today, a quick side note: Our own Tim Salmons has turned in a review of Criterion’s Judex on Blu-ray, a French crime film from 1963 that’s actually an homage to a 1916 silent film of the same name. It’s a gorgeous B&W classic from director Georges Franju. Don’t miss it.

Now then… I promised you guys a Star Trek TV on Blu-ray post.  [Read on here…]

We’ve got a lot for you today here at The Bits, starting with a pair of regular columns: Todd Doogan’s Doogan’s Queue (which runs down this week’s latest releases on Blu-ray and DVD) and Adam Jahnke’s Burnt Offerings: MOD DVD (which looks at the latest deep catalog BD & DVD titles available from Warner Archive, Sony Picture Choice, and the Universal Vault). Both columns are pretty loaded today, so don’t miss them.  [Read on here…]

Burnt Offerings for September 9, 2014

We’ve gone through a few quiet (and, indeed, dead) weeks here at Burnt Offerings recently. That all changes today with a bumper crop of new releases from almost all of the studios (except for MGM and, honestly, at this point let’s just stick a fork in them). So let’s take a gander at the latest in MOD and, needless to say, if you choose to buy a couple via the banners below, we’d be much obliged.  [Read on here…]

Doogan’s Queue for September 9, 2014

Whoooo-hooo! Pain medicine is awesome! Applesauce jet plane ambrosia salad peter built trucks. What was I saying? I have no idea. But it was important, so you should all heed that advice. Also: sandwiches can’t fly. Unless they’re reubens. Bill knows what I’m talking about.

Let’s get to this week’s releases that I think deserve your attention. [Read on here…]

We’ve got a couple of interesting pieces of announcement news to report today, and then I have some thoughts on the recent news about Blu-ray 4K. So let’s get to it. First up, the announcement news…

Lionsgate has just set A Most Wanted Man for Blu-ray and DVD release on 11/4 (SRP $29.99 and $26.98), with a digital release on 10/28. Extras will include a pair of featurettes (The Making of A Most Wanted Man and Spymaster: John le Carré in Hamburg).  [Read on here…]

All right, let’s finish the week with a little more fun release news…

First up today, Sony Picture Home Entertainment has announced the release of a Mr. Smith Goes to Washington: 75th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray on 12/2. The film has been digitally restored and remastered in 4K and will be presented in 1080p on this release. The set includes audio commentary with Frank Capra Jr., the Frank Capra’s American Dream feature-length documentary, 5 featurettes (Frank Capra Jr. Remembers... Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, Conversations with Frank Capra Jr.: A Family History, Conversations with Frank Capra Jr.: The Golden Years, Frank Capra: Collaboration, and The Frank Capra I Knew), the film’s original theatrical trailer, and a rare international trailer. SRP is $19.99 but Amazon is selling it for just $13.99. See the artwork below.  [Read on here…]
